  • President George Washington Autographed Lottery Ticket

    Paul fraser collectibles

President George Washington Autographed Lottery Ticket

    £18,000.00

President George Washington Autographed Lottery Ticket

    For Sale: £18,000

    • Rare Mountain Road Lottery ticket signed by the young Colonel George Washington
    • One of only 25 known to exist
    • Excellent condition compared to many existing examples

George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States and a respected leader who helped steer the course of history during the American Revolutionary War. He is looked upon fondly by Americans as one of the great Founding Fathers.

At the time of signing, he had recently married Martha and moved with her to Mount Vernon near Alexandria, Virginia. Here, he became one of the richest men in Virginia, living the life of planter and politician.

He expanded the Mount Vernon estate to an impressive size and began to show more interest in politics, as he presented the Virginia Assembly with legislation to the importation of goods from Great Britain.

During this time, he was also an active leader of the Virginia social elite, inviting some of the most prominent figures to his estate. He lived the life of an aristocrat, enjoying fox hunting and dances, as well as the theatre, racing and cock fights.

It is likely that his dislike of British rule began with the Mountain Road Lottery, as during preparations, the British banned all lotteries and his plans were drastically altered.

    Description

This partially-printed page measures 2 7/8" x 1 3/8" and is in fine condition, with some light staining to the top and lower borders. The 1768 Mountain Road lottery ticket reads:

1768. This Ticket [No. 173] shall entitle the Possessor to whatever Prize may happen to be drawn against it's [sic] Number in the Mountain Road Lottery

The document is signed in brown/black ink, Go. Washington. Washington's autograph is particularly fine and demonstrates his flourishing, expressive penmanship.

A fine filigree-style border design surrounds the text. Its intricate nature was possibly an attempt to avoid forgeries.

    History

In 1768, a lottery was organised to fund road works in the area of Mountain Road. Improvements were needed in order to access the hot springs of Bath County, reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. His signature on the tickets added credibility to the venture.

However, the lottery was never completed, as the British banned all lotteries just as tickets were selling. Perhaps this is the very point at which Washington's dislike of British rule began.

    Rarity

As Washington died over 200 years ago, it can be difficult to find examples of his signature that remain in good condition.

Being the first President of the United States, and a very popular figure from American history, Washington memorabilia is much sought after by both museums and private collectors. The combination of the lack of good quality Washington memorabilia and the high demand for it makes his signature very rare.

    Comparables

In 2009, a letter in which Washington argues in support of the adoption of the proposed new Constitution sold for $3,218,500. Another handwritten letter by the Founding Father sold for $834,500 back in 2009.

As well as handwritten letters, examples of the President's autograph can also sell for significant sums. In 2010, Paul Fraser Collectibles sold an accounts document signed by Washington for £29,950.

This is a rare opportunity to own a fine example of the first President of the United States' signature

Few British rulers have cast as long a shadow as Queen Victoria. Her reign lasted 63 years, which stood as the record up until great-granddaughter Elizabeth II surpassed her in 2015.

Britain was at the very height of its wealth and power during the Victorian era. Its colonies covered almost a third of the world’s land mass, making up the largest empire in history.

Queen Victoria married her beloved husband Albert in 1840. His sudden death in 1861 at the age of 42 was a blow from which she never recovered. She remained in mourning black for the rest of her days.

    Salvador Dali signed drawing

    £25,000.00

    • Stunning signed drawing of a dragon by Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali was a Spanish surrealist painter best known for his bizarre artworks.

He was a leader of the Surrealist Movement. The Persistence of Memory (1931), which shows soft, melting pocket watches on a beach, is one of the defining works of the style. Dali also created surrealist sculptures including Lobster Telephone, which features a plastic lobster attached to the handset.

He remains a hugely influential figure in the art world.

This is a large Salvador Dali drawing of a fire breathing dragon in orange crayon, accompanied by Dali's bold signature, dated 1968, and dedication 'Pour David', drawn in an Air France menu.

The menu measures approximately 11x17 inches (28x43cm), while the highly detailed drawing is approximately 5½x8 inches (14cmx20cm).

Dali clearly spent some time on this piece.

The Air France menu is for a private charter for the 'Far West Ski Association' on April 30, 1968, for a flight between Geneva-Montreal-Los Angeles.

Founded in 1930, the Far West Ski Association (FWSA) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that organised annual European ski trips for members in the 1960s.

This is only the second Dali drawing that we have had the pleasure of offering.

The other was a small Dali pencil drawing that achieved £18,000 in 2012.

This is a major rarity, not to be missed.

    £995.00

    •  A list handwritten by Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Most famous for his 'Sherlock Holmes' detective stories, Scottish-born Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was an innovator of the crime fiction genre. His writing skills included works of science fiction, plays, poetry, historical novels, romances and non-fiction.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has written the names of 14 notable people (and their professions) in bold black ink on an envelope.

Among them are: writer Douglas Goldring; politician Ellen Wilkinson; journalist Holbrook Jackson; actor Leon M. Lion; painter C. R. W. Nevinson; and the actress Elsa Lanchester.

  • Sir Henry Cooper signed 1966 World Heavyweight Championship programme
    • A Sir Henry Cooper signed programme for his 1966 World Heavyweight Championship fight against Muhammad Ali

In 1963, British boxer Sir Henry Cooper (1934-2011) took on Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) in a non-title fight in London. While he lost to Technical Knockout, with his patented left hook (‘Enry’s Ammer) Cooper became one of only four fighters ever to knock Ali down in the ring.

This is a programme for the much anticipated Ali-Cooper World Heavyweight Championship bout at the Arsenal Stadium in London on May 21, 1966.

Henry Cooper has signed on his portrait inside the booklet, where he’s billed as “British and Empire champion”.

Ali was famously dismissive of all his opponents, but after his first fight with Cooper he said: “He's the toughest fighter I ever met and the first to really drop me. He's a real fighter." The two became great friends.

The second fight ended the same as the first, with Cooper losing to Total Knockout due to a serious cut over his eye. Cooper was unable to deal Ali any real damage. He later said: “I still had the style that could upset him.

“But I must say that he's a quick learner, Ali. The second fight he learned. He would stand no nonsense.”

This is an exceptional piece of boxing history with fabulous period appeal.

Following the First World War, Leese carved an illustrious career in the army, serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the British Expeditionary Force and training the 29th Infantry Brigade.
