    German born Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was a fascinating character. She began her acting career in 1920s Berlin, then (as now) one of the world’s most creative cities. Her big break came with her performance as Lola-Lola in Josef Von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel (1930). A career in Hollywood beckoned.

    In the 1950s, she began touring the US as a cabaret act, trading off her reputation as a glamorous femme fatale. She returned to Europe in the 1960s, living out the last decade of her life as a recluse in Paris.

    This is an original 1930s 12 x 8.6 inch Portuguese lobby card for Josef Von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel (O Anjo Azul). It displays light foxing to the left hand side. You’ll find original pin marks at each corner and a minor tear at the top left that doesn't detract from the overall composition.

    Dietrich has inscribed the piece: “To Gilbert with all my love and gratitude/ Marlene”. She writes in silver marker pen. That dates the inscription to at least three decades after this poster was printed. These types of markers weren’t invented until the mid-1960s, so Dietrich could have signed anytime from then until the early 1990s.  

    Usually Dietrich would sign with her full name. She signed with her first name only for very close friends. It’s possible that “Gilbert” may be Gilbert Becaud (1927-2001), a French singer nicknamed “Mr 100,000 Volts”. The two spent a lot of time together over the years. Dietrich used to perform a version of Becaud’s song Marie Marie in her live shows.

    This is a gorgeous display piece with a rare version of Dietrich’s autograph. Presented in an attractive 17.5 x 13.5 inch plastic frame with a gold border.

    Michael X (1933-1975) born Michael de Freitas, was also known under the alias Michael Abdul Malik. A Black Power leader in 1960s Britain, de Freitas made his living from the numerous brothels he ran in London. 

    In 1971 he faced trial in the UK for extortion. Former Beatle John Lennon paid his bail and de Freitas fled to Trinidad. There he set up an arms trafficking business in the Caribbean. When his cousin Joseph Skerrit botched an arms deal, de Freitas brutally murdered his relative and buried him in the garden of his commune.

    After another flight, he was apprehended in 1975. He was executed in Port of Spain.

    Napoleon Bonaparte signs here on March 28, 1809 – the day of the Battle of Medellín.

    The clash took place as part of the broader Peninsular War (1807-1814) between France and Spain for control of Iberia. Napoleon’s forces secured a decisive victory in the battle, losing just 1,000 men. The Spanish, by contrast, lost more than 10,000.

    This note is addressed to the Duke of Feltre, General Henri Clarke (one of Napoleon’s top aides) and orders a change of staff on the French army’s Italian front.

    The text (likely transcribed by a secretary) reads: "....Le général Daumas qui est en Toscane se rendra à l’armée d’Italie pour y servir activement. Il sera remplacé dans le département de l’Ombrone par un officier général qui aurait été blessé dans la demiére guerre et qui serait fatigué..."

    That translates to: "...General Daumas who is in Tuscany will go to the Army of Italy to serve actively. He will be replaced in the department of Ombrone by a general officer who was wounded in the last war and who would be tired..."

    The text next to Napoleon's signature reads "the 28 March by night", the date General Clarke received this letter. 

    The signature itself is among the best we have ever seen. Napoleon signs with a flourish in black ink, with an unusually heavy underline.

    Napoleon’s autograph varies in size from day to day, depending on his mood. Given the breadth of this specimen, we can assume he was feeling supremely confident. If he feels any nerves about the upcoming battle, his autograph shows no trace of it.

    This is a spectacular memento from one of the greatest military leaders in history - and a man who shaped the modern world.

    The book contains various autographs including those of George Foster (baseball), Charley Pride (musician), Foster Brooks (comedian), Gerald Ford (President), Glen Campbell (musician), Pat Boone (musician), Bob Griese (football), Bob Hope (comedian).

    All the signatures were obtained at the annual 'Bogie Busters' golf tournament, which was held to raise funds for charity.

    In addition there is a Jim Irwin signature with handwritten annotation "To Ed, His love from the Moon, Jim Irwin, Apollo 15 (plus moon drawing), 21 Nov 1980".

    Armstrong and his wife Carol were guests of honour at the dinner during their visit to Ireland on 19th April 1997, during which they opened an exhibition on Space Exploration at the Kerry Museum in Tralee.

    The dinner was hosted by Dick Spring, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Ireland at the time.

    The menu is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Ann Golden, the wife of Seamus Chamberlain the Irish representative to the European Space Agency at the time. It's in fine condition and signed during a time when Armstrong was famed for his refusal to sign autographs.

    This is a pair of scissors and a comb used by Neil Amstrong's barber, Marx Sizemore, to cut the Moonwalker's hair.

    They are accompanied by 25 strands of Armstrong's hair.

    In May 2005, Neil Armstrong became involved in a legal battle with barber Marx Sizemore of Lebanon, Ohio, after finding that the barber was selling off cuts of his hair to memorabilia hunters.

    Armstrong threatened legal action unless the hair was returned or the sale proceeds donated to charity. Following Sizemore making the charitable donation, the scissors & comb used by the barber have been held in a private collection.

    Provenance

    This is a well documented collection.

    Included in the sale are copies of the legal correspondence between Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, Armstrong's legal representatives, and barber Marx Sizemore.

    Also included are sworn testimonies from Sizemore declaring the hair to be genuine:

    "This is to inform you that I have been the barber of record of Neil Armstrong since October 1999. I generally cut his hair once a month. This is the, Neil Armstrong, who was an astronaut for N.A.S.A. and the first man to walk on the moon. I do attest that the hair clippings submitted to you are his hairs that I cut from his head."

    There is another Sizemore document authenticating the scissors used to cut Armstrong's hair.

    A notarised Public State of Colorado document is also included, detailing how the original purchaser obtained the hair from Marx Sizemore.

    Rarity

    Since 1994, Neil Armstrong ceased signing autographs as he found out that many forgeries were selling for large amounts of money.

    Armstrong's is now considered to be one the most valuable and best-performing signatures. 

    An estimated 600 million people tuned in to watch the launch of Apollo 11 and so it comes as no surprise that memorabilia related to the mission and its astronauts is highly sought after.

    Combine this demand with the shortage of Neil Armstrong signed memorabilia out there and it becomes apparent why personal items such as this comb, scissors and hair, are incredibly rare.

    History of hair collecting

    Hair collecting was hugely popular in the Victorian era. Military officer, Robert E. Lee would regularly give away a sample of his hair instead of an autograph.

    A curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Harry Rubenstein, says "more so than an autograph, it was a sign of affection".

    The poet Leigh Hunt is known to have had a collection of hair from 21 notable figures inducing Edgar Allen Poe, John Keats and George Washington. This collection is currently on display in the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas.

    Comparables

    The value of the 25 off-cuts of hair alone should not be underestimated... A single strand of Elvis Presley hair recently sold for £1,055 ($1,750) at auction.

    Also in recent years locks from Babe Ruth have sold for $38,000 at auction, John Lennon for $48,000, Elvis and Che Guevara for $119,500. Even teen sensations Justin Bieber's hair has sold at auction for $40,668.

    Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African politician, anti-apartheid revolutionary and philanthropist, who spent his life battling racial injustice.

    He spent 27 years in prison for fighting apartheid and opposing the South African government, and was initially labelled a terrorist by some Western governments.

    Mandela was finally released from jail in 1990 and helped negotiate the end of apartheid, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1993 along with President F. W. de Klerk.

    A pull out compartment contains an 8.4 x 8.4 inch portrait of Mandela by the photographer Greg Bartley (signed by the artist).

    • A Nelson Mandela autograph on photo, taken during his historic first state visit to Britain in 1996 

    Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African politician, anti-apartheid revolutionary and philanthropist, who spent his life battling racial injustice.

    He spent 27 years in prison for fighting apartheid and opposing the South African government, and was initially labelled a terrorist by some Western governments.

    Mandela was finally released from jail in 1990 and helped negotiate the end of apartheid, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1993 along with President F. W. de Klerk.

    In 1994 he was then elected President in the country's first multiracial general election, and served as the head of state until 1999.

    This colour photograph depicts Mandela giving his historic speech to Parliament on July 11, 1996.

    The photograph also features Lord MacKay of Clashfern (the Lord Chancellor), and Betty Boothroyd  (Speaker of the House of Commons), both of whom also gave speeches that day.

    The photograph is signed boldly by all three in black ink. Mandela has also dated his autograph "10.4.99".

    The photograph is framed and glazed, and measures 24.5 x 34cm.

    During his four-day visit to the UK Mandela stayed at Buckingham Palace as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II; hosted a music concert at the Royal Albert Hall to raise funds for South African children's charities; visited Brixton, the heart of London's black community; and gave an impassioned speech to Parliament.

    According to reports, members of Parliament brought their families along with them to witness the speech inside a packed Westminster Hall.

    He was introduced on stage by Betty Boothroyd, Speaker of the House of Commons, who stated:

    "You spent more than a third of your life in prison, though your spirit was freer there than those of your captors outside."

    Mandela's speech mentioned the often fraught relationship between Britain and South Africa over the past two centuries; the struggle to rebuild his country and unify its people; and the continuing fight against racism around the world.

    He stated:"Racism is a blight on the human conscience.

    "The idea that any people can be inferior to another, to the point where those who consider themselves superior define and treat the rest as sub-human, denies the humanity even of those who elevate themselves to the status of gods."

    This exceptional signed photo is a wonderful tribute to one of the most universally admired figures in history.

    1930 Series of thirty-six stamp-size die proofs in black on glazed card for the 1931-40 'Arms' postal fiscal issue, affixed to two ledger pages (numbered '261' and '262') and headed 'NEW ZEALAND / STAMP DUTIES', each proof handstamped 'CANCELLED' in RED and numbered below, arranged in groups according to the different side-panel designs as follows:

    'DESIGN No. 1' commencing with an original undenominated master proof for the whole series with uncleared value tablets and side-panels, a master proof showing side-panels, 'SIXPENCE' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and four completed proofs for the 1s3d, 2s6d, 7s6d and 12s6d values;

    'DESIGN No. 2' comprising two master proofs showing side-panels, 'SHILLINGS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and eleven completed proofs for the 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 15s, 25s, 30s and 35s values;

    'DESIGN No. 3' comprising master proof showing side-panels, 'TEN SHILLINGS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and three completed proofs for the £2.10, £3.10 and £4.10 values;

    'DESIGN No. 4' comprising master proof showing side-panels, 'POUNDS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and ten completed proofs for the £1, £2, £3, £4, £5, £6, £7, £8, £9, £10 values;

    'DESIGN No. 5' comprising two master proofs showing side-panels and undenominated value tablets at top and foot (one with uncleared value tablets and the other with cleared value tablets, this last intended to allow the production of additional values via locally produced duty plates, as with SG 700, 825 and F212/6).

    Although the stamps were printed by the Govt Ptg Office, Wellington, the original dies and plates were produced by the Royal Mint.

    A unique and magnificent series of the utmost importance, never previously available to collectors.

    From the recently discovered proof book presented to Royal Mint engraver H.A.Richardson on his retirement (when the red 'CANCELLED' handstamp was applied).

    [The Postage Stamps of New Zealand vol 1, pp.514-5 refers to the Royal Mint engraving steel dies and making 32 electrotype plates. This probably relates to 28 denominated values, and four partly denominated ('AND SIXPENCE', 'SHILLINGS', 'TEN SHILLINGS' and 'POUNDS') values.

    N.B. It should be pointed out that the reverses of the two ledger pages remain intact, and comprise '260' with nine Irish 'income tax' die proofs and '263' with an important range of twelve NZ 1938 postal stationery die proofs, each with the same 'CANCELLED' handstamp.]

    1935 (1 May) 'Second Pictorial' 2d, 2½d, 4d to 8d, 1s, 2s, 3s, nine values, De La Rue stamp-size die proofs in issued colours on thick slightly surfaced unwatermarked wove with 2mm margins and part original gum.

    Couple of trivial blemishes mentioned for accuracy (1s with small corner thin, 3s with minor split at top of frame due to pressure of printing), but a beautiful series of great rarity.

    [The ½d, 1d, 1½d and 3d values are not present; the 9d value of the set was printed by lithography by Waterlow, and does not exist in this form].

    1859 (AP 1) outer wrapper from St Johns to Baltimore, 'Tucker' correspondence, endorsed 'pr Mail via Halifax', franked by 1857-64 4d scarlet-vermilion, good to very large margins except a little close at foot, tied by light barred oval, with red despatch cds (overstruck by '5/BOSTON/BR.PKT.' entry cds dated 'AP 10') alongside.

    Vertical filing folds (clear of stamp and postmarks), but very fine for this usage, the stamp a particularly attractive example with lovely colour.

    Ex Bill Gross, Hubbard and Carey Fox with Royal Philatelic Society (1968) and V.G. Greene (2001) Certificates of Authenticity.
