    Che Guevara signed certificate

    £4,950.00

    • A document featuring the autograph of Che Guevara - one of the most significant political figures of the 20th century

    • Discover more about this piece here

Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (1928-1967) was a writer, guerrilla leader and Marxist revolutionary, who played a major role in the Cuban Revolution.

In 1959 Guevara and Fidel Castro led a group of insurgents to overthrow the government of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, and established Cuba as a Communist state.

This 'Honourable Mention' certificate was presented to worker Hiram Peres de Alejo in March 1962 for his "endeavour in the increase of production".

Under the new Communist regime, Guevara had abolished all pay raises, and so Cuban workers were encouraged with moral, rather than material incentives.

These included a system of diplomas, medals, certificates, honourable mentions in factory bulletins, and public ceremonies.

The certificate bears Guevara's iconic, instantly recognisable autograph, which reads simply "Che", along with an embossed official government seal.

The document measures 27.8 x 35.3cm, with several separations repaired on the reverse, and slight creasing and toning. These do not affect Guevara's signature.

      Fidel Castro signed certificate

      • A certificate of recognition awarded to a Cuban social worker in 2001
      • Featuring a fine signature from Fidel Castro
      • Discover more about this incredible item here

Fidel Castro (1926 – 2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who led the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

Castro was the architect behind the Cuban Revolution in 1959, which overturned the right-wing authoritarian government and turned the nation into a one-party socialist state.

Castro remains one of the most divisive political figures of the 20th century, revered by many as a champion of social justice and anti-imperialism, and hated by others as a brutal dictator.

Prior to his death in November 2016, Castro was listed on the PFC40 Autograph Index as the world's most valuable living signature, with the price of his autograph having risen 16.9% per annum since 2000.

This certificate was awarded to a Fernando J Valdes Freenas in July 2001 and commemorates his completion of a course in social work.

These large certificates were produced throughout Castro’s presidency to recognise the efforts of Cubans in society. This is a particularly good specimen.

Measuring 16.5 x 11.8 inches, it features a bold example of Castro’s signature in blue felt tip pen.

This certificate was awarded to a Marcial L Gomez Calderius in December 1982, in recognition of his work with the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR).

This CDR remains active today and serves as the eyes and ears of the Cuban government at ground level. Every neighbourhood has its own branch, with 75% of Cuba’s 11.2m population registered in the organisation.

Every local resident has a file, which is regularly updated on information with their personal relationships and activities. The CDR also performs less sinister operations, including blood drives and recycling initiatives.

This is a large and fine example of Castro’s signature, executed in blue ink. The certificate itself measures 10.8 x 8.5 inches and is in good condition. A minute tear to the bottom right does not detract.

Fidel Castro (1926 – 2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who led the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

The decree is dated 20 November 1959 - just 11 months after Castro seized power.

Castro has signed in black fountain pen above his title of "PRIMER MINISTRO". The page is enhanced by two official embossed seals under the signatures of Castro and Oltuski.

A second page features a second Castro autograph, in the form of his initials. Torrado and Castro have both also signed this second page.

The decree ended Cuba's use of an unpopular one cent postage stamp surcharge, used to fight tuberculosis in the country.

      Paul fraser collectibles

Mahatma Gandhi's personal food bowl, fork and spoons

      £75,000.00

      • Historically important metal food bowl, two wooden spoons and a wooden fork owned by Mahatma Gandhi, "Father of the Nation"

      • Used by Gandhi during his incarceration at Aga Khan Palace in Pune, as well as at the Palm-Bun house, Juhu Beach, Mumbai

      • Provenance from shipping magnate Sumati Morajee, owner of Palm-Bun house, who cared for Gandhi while there

      • Get more information about this item here

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu (Father of Nation), was the pre-eminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and freedom across the world.

Gandhi is known in India as the Father of the Nation. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Gandhi's philosophy was not theoretical but one of pragmatism, that is, practising his principles in the moment. Asked to give a message to the people, he would respond, "My life is my message".

Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 while he was walking to address a prayer meeting.

Without doubt one of the most historically important collections we have ever had the pleasure of offering

A collection of eating utensils, comprising a metal food bowl, a simple wooden fork and two wooden spoons belonging to Mahatma Gandhi.

The food bowl measures approximately 2½" high by 8" in diameter and carries the stamped numbers to its base '208/42'. The spoons and fork are approximately 6½" in length. All items are in good condition.

The items belonged to Gandhi and were used by him at the Palm-Bun house, owned by shipping magnate Sumati Morarjee, at Juhu Beach, Bombay (Mumbai).

According to Morarjee family lore the utensils were used by Gandhi during his incarceration at the Aga Khan's palace in Pune from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, and then taken to their home at Juhu Beach.

Gandhi first visited the Palm-Bun house in 1915 after his return from South Africa. He also spent extended periods of time at the home, most notably in 1924 after his surgery for appendicitis and in 1944 after his release from detention at the Aga Khan's palace in Pune.

During both extended visits Gandhi was cared for by Sumati Morarjee, a close associate of Gandhi's who was actively involved in the underground movement for independence.

Morarjee is also known as the first woman of Indian shipping, and is credited as the first woman in the world to head an organisation of ship owners, the Indian National Steamship Owners Association. In 1971 she was awarded the second highest civilian honour of India for her civil services.

These items were subsequently kept by Sumati Morarjee at her home, in an unofficial museum. The items are documented in the book Sumati Morarjee Felicitation Volume (1970) and also in Vithalbhai Jhaveri's epic film biography of Gandhi.

Provenance: The collection of Sumati Morarjee.

An exceptional collection of Gandhi memorabilia.

Napoleon Bonaparte Authentic Strand of Hair

      £399.00

      • A guaranteed authentic half inch strand of Napoleon Bonaparte's hair

Napoleon is one of history's most iconic figures. As emperor of France, his actions shaped Europe in the early 19th century.

Following a successful coup d'etat in 1799, Napoleon went on to conquer much of Western and North Eastern Europe.

Defeat in Russia and at the Battle of Waterloo has diminished the stature of his achievements. However, Napoleon was key in establishing a legal framework used across much of Europe, based on Meritocracy, and his military strategy is still widely studied across the world.

When the Duke of Wellington was asked to name the greatest general of the day, he answered: "In this age, in past ages, in any age, Napoleon."

A guaranteed genuine half inch strand of Napoleon Bonaparte's hair, presented on a card backing that's perfect for framing.

Superb provenance; the hair originates from the famed collection of Margaretta Pierrepont, wife of President Ulysses S Grant’s Attorney General.

      Nelson Mandela signed photograph

      £4,950.00

      • A Nelson Mandela autograph on photo, taken during his historic first state visit to Britain in 1996

      • Discover more about this item here

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African politician, anti-apartheid revolutionary and philanthropist, who spent his life battling racial injustice.

He spent 27 years in prison for fighting apartheid and opposing the South African government, and was initially labelled a terrorist by some Western governments.

Mandela was finally released from jail in 1990 and helped negotiate the end of apartheid, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1993 along with President F. W. de Klerk.

In 1994 he was then elected President in the country's first multiracial general election, and served as the head of state until 1999.

This colour photograph depicts Mandela giving his historic speech to Parliament on July 11, 1996.

The photograph also features Lord MacKay of Clashfern (the Lord Chancellor), and Betty Boothroyd  (Speaker of the House of Commons), both of whom also gave speeches that day.

The photograph is signed boldly by all three in black ink. Mandela has also dated his autograph "10.4.99".

The photograph is framed and glazed, and measures 24.5 x 34cm.

During his four-day visit to the UK Mandela stayed at Buckingham Palace as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II; hosted a music concert at the Royal Albert Hall to raise funds for South African children's charities; visited Brixton, the heart of London's black community; and gave an impassioned speech to Parliament.

According to reports, members of Parliament brought their families along with them to witness the speech inside a packed Westminster Hall.

He was introduced on stage by Betty Boothroyd, Speaker of the House of Commons, who stated:

"You spent more than a third of your life in prison, though your spirit was freer there than those of your captors outside."

Mandela's speech mentioned the often fraught relationship between Britain and South Africa over the past two centuries; the struggle to rebuild his country and unify its people; and the continuing fight against racism around the world.

He stated:"Racism is a blight on the human conscience.

"The idea that any people can be inferior to another, to the point where those who consider themselves superior define and treat the rest as sub-human, denies the humanity even of those who elevate themselves to the status of gods."

This exceptional signed photo is a wonderful tribute to one of the most universally admired figures in history.

Pope Pius XII Personally Owned and Worn Skullcap

      £8,950.00

      • A zucchetto skullcap worn by Pope Pius XII

Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli (1867 – 1958) served as head of the Catholic Church from March 1939 until his death in 1958.

His reign coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in modern European history, including World War II, the Holocaust, post-war reconstruction, the rise of communism and the Cold War.

Pius XII attempted to serve as a mediator between nations during the war, whilst remaining impartial in the conflict.

He established the Vatican Information Service, which provided information for the families of thousands of war refugees, and instructed the church to discreetly aid Jews, saving thousands of lives.

This traditional white zucchetto skullcap was personally owned and worn by Pope Pius XII.

It is customary for the Pope to offer his skullcap as a gift, if presented with another to replace it.

Pope Pius XII was the first pontiff in the modern era to start this tradition, and the practice has since been continued by Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis.

In recent years a handful of these rare Pope-worn skullcaps have appeared at auction, with examples selling for thousands of dollars.

The skullcap measures 6.5" in diameter, and includes the small label inside "[Socie]tas Mariae Reparatricis."

The skullcap is accompanied by an 'Anticamera Pontificia' card in Italian, signed by Mario Nasalli Rocca di Corneliano as Cameriere Segreto Partecipante di Sua Santita, which reads (translated):

"The white zucchetto that comes with this card was used by His Holiness Pius XII, reigning."

      President Abraham Lincoln Bedroom Wallpaper

      £2,950.00

      • Seven fragments of wallpaper from Abraham Lincoln's bedroom in Springfield, Illinois
      • Get the full story here

Abraham Lincoln was elected 16th president of the United States in March 1861, during a time of great upheaval. The big issue of the time was slavery, with Lincoln coming down firmly on the side of abolition.

In response a confederacy of southern states seceded from the US, sparking a civil war. Lincoln is credited with piloting the Union to victory and ending slavery in North America. Sadly he did not live to see the changes he enacted brought in. He was assassinated as he sat in a theatre box in Washington, DC on April 14, 1865.

Before he left for Washington, DC in 1861, Lincoln and his family lived at 413 South Eighth Street in Springfield. The house was built by Rev. Charles Dresser who married Abraham and Mary in November 1842.

Rev. Dresser sold the home to Lincoln in 1844 for $1500. In the mid 1850s, the home was raised to a full story residence.

These unique fragments of wallpaper come from Abraham and Mary Lincoln's bedroom at the north end of the second floor.

Future custodians of the house included Mrs Lincoln's nephew, Albert S. Edwards and his wife Mrs Mary Edwards Brown.

Mary removed and kept these wallpaper fragments after redecorating. In 1956 she sold them to Dorothy Kunhardt, daughter of Frederick Hill Meserve. Following Dorothy's death in 1979, her unique collection of Lincoln memorabilia was sold off.

The largest fragment here measures approximately 3 x 2.5 inches and the smallest measures approximately 1 x1 inch. It's an exceptional piece of Lincoln memorabilia. If only these walls could talk...

President George Washington Autographed Lottery Ticket

      For Sale: £18,000

      • Rare Mountain Road Lottery ticket signed by the young Colonel George Washington
      • One of only 25 known to exist
      • Excellent condition compared to many existing examples

George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States and a respected leader who helped steer the course of history during the American Revolutionary War. He is looked upon fondly by Americans as one of the great Founding Fathers.

At the time of signing, he had recently married Martha and moved with her to Mount Vernon near Alexandria, Virginia. Here, he became one of the richest men in Virginia, living the life of planter and politician.

He expanded the Mount Vernon estate to an impressive size and began to show more interest in politics, as he presented the Virginia Assembly with legislation to the importation of goods from Great Britain.

During this time, he was also an active leader of the Virginia social elite, inviting some of the most prominent figures to his estate. He lived the life of an aristocrat, enjoying fox hunting and dances, as well as the theatre, racing and cock fights.

It is likely that his dislike of British rule began with the Mountain Road Lottery, as during preparations, the British banned all lotteries and his plans were drastically altered.

      Description

This partially-printed page measures 2 7/8" x 1 3/8" and is in fine condition, with some light staining to the top and lower borders. The 1768 Mountain Road lottery ticket reads:

1768. This Ticket [No. 173] shall entitle the Possessor to whatever Prize may happen to be drawn against it's [sic] Number in the Mountain Road Lottery

The document is signed in brown/black ink, Go. Washington. Washington's autograph is particularly fine and demonstrates his flourishing, expressive penmanship.

A fine filigree-style border design surrounds the text. Its intricate nature was possibly an attempt to avoid forgeries.

      History

In 1768, a lottery was organised to fund road works in the area of Mountain Road. Improvements were needed in order to access the hot springs of Bath County, reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. His signature on the tickets added credibility to the venture.

However, the lottery was never completed, as the British banned all lotteries just as tickets were selling. Perhaps this is the very point at which Washington's dislike of British rule began.

      Rarity

As Washington died over 200 years ago, it can be difficult to find examples of his signature that remain in good condition.

Being the first President of the United States, and a very popular figure from American history, Washington memorabilia is much sought after by both museums and private collectors. The combination of the lack of good quality Washington memorabilia and the high demand for it makes his signature very rare.

    • Winston Churchill Signed Document
      • A document signed by one of the most significant world leaders in 20th century history

Winston Churchill (1874 –1965) was a politician and statesman who twice served as British Prime Minister, and is regarded as one of the most influential people in British history.

Churchill led Britain to victory against Nazi Germany during WWII, with his regular speeches and broadcasts inspiring resistance against Adolf Hitler during the darkest days of the conflict.

In 1963 he became the first person to be declared an honorary citizen of the United States, and following his death in 1965 he was granted a state funeral by Queen Elizabeth II to mark his service to the nation.

In addition to his political career, Churchill was a renowned writer and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953.

He was also an accomplished painter, and his paintings remain highly sought-after by collectors today.

This document relates to the naturalization of a Russian immigrant and his family prior to WWI.

Certificates of Naturalization could be issued to any 'alien' who had lived in Britain for more than five years.

These applications were then signed off personally by the Secretary of State for the Home Office, a role to which Churchill was promoted in 1910.

At just 35 years old, he was the second-youngest politician in British history to ever hold the position.

The two-page document is dated September 16, 1911, and bears Churchill's signature on the second page.

The document includes pencil annotations in the top right corners of both sheets, and has minor soiling.

Also included is a collection of 15 original wartime press photographs featuring Winston Churchill on several occasions.

The black and white photographs come in different sizes, and feature their original press captions pasted onto the rear.

A superb collection of items relating to the 20th century's 'Greatest Briton'.
