Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon autographed photo

    £150.00

    • A rare and beautiful Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon autographed photo

Ben Lyon (1901-1979) began his career as an actor on Broadway. He starred in a number of Hollywood movies, notably 1930's Hell's Angels. Following the decline of his acting career he became a studio executive with 20th Century Fox.

It was while working at 20th Century Fox that Lyon discovered a young actress, Norma Jeane Dougherty, renamed her Marilyn Monroe, organised her first colour screen test, and signed her to her first studio contract. Of Monroe, he is quoted as saying that she was "Jean Harlow all over again".

Lyon married Bebe Daniels (1901-1971) in 1930, at the height of his success. Daniels was a star in her own right, carving out a career as a child actress in Hollywood's silent movies. She made over 230 films and, from the 1950s, worked on radio and television to much acclaim in England.

This striking photograph shows the successful couple bathed in soft light. The Hollywood sheen of glamour is evident with the flawless skin and engaging eyes. Lyon's hair is greased back neatly, his eyebrows slightly furrowed with intensity. Daniel's hair is softly curled, her eyes and lips glossed heavily in make-up.

Sepia-toned and attractively mounted, the photograph measures 6.5 x 4.5 inches, without mount. Daniels' and Lyon's autographs feature in the bottom portion of the photograph. Daniels has written: "Our best wishes, Bebe Daniels", with Lyon adding "Ben Lyon".

The photograph is in excellent condition, with the autographs standing out superbly against the photograph's white border.

Their autographs are rare separately, together they're extremely scarce.

  • Bert Lahr signed photo
    • A rare Bert Lahr autographed photo depicting him as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz

Bert Lahr (1895-1967) was an American stage and screen performer, best-known for his role as the Cowardly Lion in the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz.

Lahr began his career as a vaudeville performer on the Columbia Burlesque Circuit, and worked his way up to starring roles on Broadway, before heading to Hollywood in the 1930s.

He featured in several films before landing the part of the Cowardly Lion in the 1939 MGM musical, starring alongside Judy Garland, Ray Bolger and Jack Haley.

During filming, Lahr was known to ad-lib lines, causing numerous re-takes as his co-stars burst out laughing. When later asked by reporters if he was worried about being typecast, he replied, "Yeah, but how many parts are there for lions?"

Lahr returned to the stage later in his career, co-starring in the 1956 US premiere of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, and winning the 1964 Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role in Foxy.

This vintage 10 x 8 photograph features Lahr in his full Cowardly Lion costume, and is strikingly signed "To Vickie, with love, Uncle Bert" at the top of the image in blue ink. The recipient was Lahr's niece Vickie Arthur.

Lahr was an infrequent signer of autographs during his life, and signed photographs of him in his most iconic role as the Cowardly Lion are highly rare.

  • Charles Dickens signed document

    Paul fraser collectibles

    Charles Dickens signed document

    £15,000.00

    • A large and exceptional land lease signed by Charles Dickens

Charles John Huffman Dickens (1812-1870) is regarded as the greatest English writer of his age. His broad body of work includes some of the most celebrated novels ever written - including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol.

Dickens was born into a middle class family in Portsmouth, but his circumstances changed dramatically when his father was slung into a debtors’ prison in 1824. Dickens was forced to leave school and start work in a boot polish factory to support his family.

While his father was freed a few months later, allowing Dickens to return to school, this formative experience left him burning with a righteous anger at the conditions the working classes had to endure.

Charles John Huffman Dickens (1812-1870) created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian Period. His works include A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities, the best selling novel of all time.

This exceptionally large document, measuring 26½ x 22 inches, is dated 21st March 1863. Boasting impeccable penmanship the document is an Indenture made between Charles Dickens ('Of Higham, in the County of Kent') and John Brooker, a local farmer for the lease of land.

It relates to 'a piece or parcel of land or garden ground containing by estimation eight acres and sixteen perches or thereabouts as now stumped off formerly woodland part of a piece of land formerly called or known by the name of "Seeming Ruff" but now called "Scrubby Bushes" situate lying and being at or near a certain place called Gads Hill in the Parish of Higham in the County of Kent..."

The document has been signed by Dickens in bold blue fountain pen at the base, either side of a red wax seal affixed to a small green ribbon.

Dickens association with Gads Hill is well documented. In 1856 he purchased Gads Hill Place for £1,790. He had first encountered the house in 1821 when he was nine years old and would often walk from Chatham to Gads Hill Place.

He later wrote "I used to look at it as a wonderful mansion (Which God knows it is not) when I was a very odd little child with the first faint shadows of all my books in my head - I suppose."

35 years later he purchased the house, initially as an investment, and later as his personal country retreat before moving in permanently in June 1857.

It was at Gads Hill Place that Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and his unfinished work The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

One of the main characters in Edwin Drood is Stony Durdles the stonemason, who Dickens based on local farmer John Brooker, referenced in this Indenture. In 1897 Elliot Stock, in his book on Dickens' life, wrote "[In] the late veteran Mr John Brooker, of Higham (whose father planted the famous cedars at gads Hill Place), were recognised some of the better qualities and peculiarities of Stony Durdles"

We've been racking our brains but can't think of another document that mentions both Charles Dickens and the real life inspiration of one of his characters.

A truly interesting and unique item. Huge size makes for a very impressive display piece.

    Charles II signed document

    £1,950.00

In 1649, Charles I met his end at the Tower of London. Oliver Cromwell was now the ruler of England. Within days, the Scots crowned Charles’ son Charles II. In 1651, Charles II attempted to wrest control of England at the Battle of Worcester but was roundly trounced. He fled to France, where he remained in exile until 1660 – two years after the death of Cromwell. Charles II was a hugely popular king, known to his subjects as the Merry Monarch. His reign was a welcome relief from Cromwell’s Puritanism.

This is a spectacular 9 x 14 inch vellum document bearing a major signature from Charles II (1630-1685) at the top of the page. Charles signs “Charles R” (the R is for Rex – Latin for king). It’s dated November 13, 1668.

The text addresses the Commissioners of the Treasury (including George Monck and the Duke of Albermarle). It requests a salary payment of £100 to Peter Du Moulin, Secretary of the Council for Trade and a chaplain at Canterbury Cathedral.
The piece is mounted on white paper and displays a light tear that goes through signature, along with some toning,

    Che Guevara signed certificate

    £4,950.00

    • A document featuring the autograph of Che Guevara - one of the most significant political figures of the 20th century

    • Discover more about this piece here

Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (1928-1967) was a writer, guerrilla leader and Marxist revolutionary, who played a major role in the Cuban Revolution.

In 1959 Guevara and Fidel Castro led a group of insurgents to overthrow the government of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, and established Cuba as a Communist state.

This 'Honourable Mention' certificate was presented to worker Hiram Peres de Alejo in March 1962 for his "endeavour in the increase of production".

Under the new Communist regime, Guevara had abolished all pay raises, and so Cuban workers were encouraged with moral, rather than material incentives.

These included a system of diplomas, medals, certificates, honourable mentions in factory bulletins, and public ceremonies.

The certificate bears Guevara's iconic, instantly recognisable autograph, which reads simply "Che", along with an embossed official government seal.

The document measures 27.8 x 35.3cm, with several separations repaired on the reverse, and slight creasing and toning. These do not affect Guevara's signature.

EH Shepard Autographed Drawing for Punch Magazine

      £5,950.00

      • Satirical illustration from EH Shepard for 1936 edition of Punch magazine
      • Original artwork signed by the Winnie the Pooh artist
      • Originates from the Shepard family's own holding
      • Discover more about this item here

Ernest Howard "EH" Shepard (1879-1976) was a popular cartoonist, perhaps most famous for his illustrations of Winnie the Pooh in the famous books by A.A. Milne. He is also known for bringing to life the characters in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

Shepard worked as a cartoonist for Punch magazine from 1921 until 1953, and his work is often thought of as somewhat gentle and uplifting. Fellow cartoonist John Jenson once said "Shepard moved from strength to strength, increasingly able to impose his quiet humour on otherwise grim and humourless topics."

This original, signed drawing measures 8¼" x 7¾" and is mounted to an overall size of 15" x 15".

The detailed drawing shows Mr Punch standing is his living room which is adorned with Christmas holly. Mr Punch is holding a copy of a newspaper whose headline reads "COAL DISPUTE" and looking at Toby the dog who is holding an empty scuttle and pointing to the small amount of coal on the fire.

EH Shepard has autographed the original drawing in the bottom left hand corner.

The drawing is a reference to the dispute that resulted from the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission's proposal to regulate the production and supply of coal, and merge small mines.

Headed "VOLUME CXC", it is thought that this particular drawing was used as the front cover of the volume of Punch magazine January to June 1936.

This rare piece comes from the Shepard family's own holding.

Elizabeth Taylor love letter to Richard Burton

      £35,000.00

      • A handwritten love letter written from Elizabeth Taylor to husband Richard Burton in 1974
      • Incredible content that lays bare the passion between this legendary couple
      • Get the full story behind this piece here

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were two of the world's biggest stars when they embarked on an affair on the set of Cleopatra (1961).

Their romance was tumultuous. Burton was a womaniser and both were heavy drinkers. Still they were unable to stay apart for long. They were married twice, with both weddings leading to divorce. So intense was the relationship that it has gone down in Hollywood history.

A love letter written, in pencil, by Elizabeth Taylor to her husband Richard Burton on their 10 year wedding anniversary, March 15th 1974, just days before their breakup.

Taylor and Burton were renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie "The Klansman". Their lease on the home began on February 15th 1974.

      The letter reads in full:

"My darling (my still) My husband. I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you - (with you) - my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times.

Most of all my love for you, and whatever love you can dole out to me - I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only "boil and bubble" inside and hope you understand how I really feel.

Anyway I lust thee, Your (still) Wife. P.S. O'Love, let us never take each other for granted again! P.P.S. How about that - 10 years!!"

Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity. However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure. After that, Taylor made sure she was on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne Of The Thousand Days.

A further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years. An affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumours of an affair with Raquel Welch.

Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with "a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women."

The love letter is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them:

"This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th til April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the masterbedroom bed."

To our knowledge no other Taylor-Burton love letter has ever been offered for sale.

As seen in the Daily Mail, the Telegraph and the Daily Express.

      Elvis Presley Twice-Signed 1950s Album

      £15,000.00

      • A highly rare original copy of Elvis Presley's second studio album, signed twice by the king of rock and roll.
      • Gifted to a fellow member of his US Army unit during his military service in Germany.
      • Find out more about this piece here

Elvis Presley (1935 – 1977) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century, known to his fans simply as "The King".

As one of the originators of rock and roll, he created a music style which changed the world and inspired generations of artists from the Beatles to the present day.

Presley remains the best-selling solo artist of all-time, with estimated record sales of 600 million, and performed over numerous styles including rockabilly, pop, blues and gospel.

Today millions of fans flock from around the world to visit his former home of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and rare items of his memorabilia regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.

'Elvis' was Presley's second studio album, released in the US in October 1956, and featured a mix of original songs, country ballads and Little Richard covers.

The record also featured a version of 'Old Shep' – the 1940s country song that Elvis had first performed in a Tupelo talent contest when he was just 10 years old.

The album spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Albums chart, making Elvis the first recording artist to have their first two albums go straight to #1 in the same year.

Five months after the release of the album, Presley was inducted into the US Army. He was assigned to Company A of the 3rd Armored Division's 1st Medium Tank Battalion, and completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas before heading overseas.

Elvis autographed and inscribed this copy of the album to a fellow member of the 3rd Armored Division whilst he was stationed in Friedberg, West Germany, and remained in the same family's collection for years.

The album bears Presley's autograph in bold blue ink on the reverse of the album cover, and another inscribed "Many thanks! Elvis Presley" on the album's protective inner sleeve.

The album sleeve shows overall age wear, creases and scuffed edges/corners. The original vinyl record is still present within.

This record represents the first signed Elvis Presley album we've ever had the pleasure of offering at Paul Fraser Collectibles.

Bearing not one, but two bold signatures, it represents a superb opportunity and would take pride of place in any music fan's collection.

Castro was the architect behind the Cuban Revolution in 1959, which overturned the right-wing authoritarian government and turned the nation into a one-party socialist state.

Castro remains one of the most divisive political figures of the 20th century, revered by many as a champion of social justice and anti-imperialism, and hated by others as a brutal dictator.

Prior to his death in November 2016, Castro was listed on the PFC40 Autograph Index as the world's most valuable living signature, with the price of his autograph having risen 16.9% per annum since 2000.

This certificate was awarded to a Marcial L Gomez Calderius in December 1982, in recognition of his work with the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR).

This CDR remains active today and serves as the eyes and ears of the Cuban government at ground level. Every neighbourhood has its own branch, with 75% of Cuba’s 11.2m population registered in the organisation.

Every local resident has a file, which is regularly updated on information with their personal relationships and activities. The CDR also performs less sinister operations, including blood drives and recycling initiatives.

This is a large and fine example of Castro’s signature, executed in blue ink. The certificate itself measures 10.8 x 8.5 inches and is in good condition. A minute tear to the bottom right does not detract.

      Frank Sinatra Signed Set List

      £3,950.00

      • A signed set list from the concert Sinatra called "his finest hour"

      • Read more about this piece here

Frank Sinatra (1915 – 1998) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century.

Known to his fans as 'Ol' Blue Eyes', or simply ' The Voice', Sinatra has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, making him amongst the biggest recording artists in music history.

He was also a renowned screen actor, winning an Academy Award for his role in From Here to Eternity, and starring in critically-acclaimed films such as The Man with the Golden Arm, The Manchurian Candidate and Guys and Dolls.

Sinatra was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997.

In May 1970, Frank Sinatra returned to England for his first live appearances in eight years, backed by Count Basie and his Orchestra.

He performed two sold-out midnight shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London, in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

In attendance were Princess Margaret, president of the charity, along with stars such as Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, Richard Attenborough and the cream of London society.

Those who witnessed the shows described them as a landmark moment in Sinatra's career – a view shared by Ol' Blue Eyes himself.

He later said in a radio interview that he felt the performances were "his finest hour", and was evidently frustrated that they had not been professionally recorded.

According to legend, Sinatra was so desperate for a copy of his performance that night that he personally wrote to the British Sinatra Music Society, asking if anyone had illegally recorded it.

He was apparently in luck, and one member of the society sent him a bootleg tape, receiving a gift from Sinatra in return as thanks.

The typed set-list lists the many classic songs Sinatra performed during the shows, such as 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'The Lady Is a Tramp', 'That's Life' and 'I've Got You Under my Skin', along with his show-stopping encore of 'My Way'.

The single-page list measures 8 x 10", and bears Sinatra's clear autograph in black ballpoint.

The set-list is accompanied by a letter related to the concerts, dated April 13, 1970, and the original mailing envelope.

A rare signed set-list from one of Frank Sinatra's greatest-ever live performances.

      Grandma Moses Autographed Photograph

      £995.00

      • A signed photograph of American outsider artist Grandma Moses, dated 1951

American painter Grandma Moses (1860-1961) was discovered by the collector Louis Caldor. At the time, Grandma Moses was bartering paintings at the Women's Exchange during the Great Depression. Otto Kallir, an art dealer, put some of her work on display at his New York gallery, Galerie Saint-Etienne. The paintings were well received and went on to exhibit in Europe and Japan.

Grandma Moses only began painting later in life, as it was gentler on her arthritis-stricken hands than needlework. Self-taught, her art can be described as 'primitive' or folk art, disregarding strict perspective.

This rare candid photo of Moses, 3½" x 3½", shows the artist standing outside her home. The picture is autographed on the lower border in black ink, Grandma Moses. On the reverse, the item is stamped This is a Kodacolor Print, Made by Eastman Kodak Company…Week of Sept 24, 1951.

Some light toning and fading. The signature is in excellent condition, very clear and crisp.

      • Two items connected with Gretna Green – a popular site for runaway couples
      • A postcard signed by anvil priest Richard Rennison
      • An original blank marriage certificate signed by anvil priest Peter Dickson
      • Find out more about this item here

In 1753, the English government passed an act requiring under-21s to get parental permission to marry. No such law existed in Scotland, sending those who wished to elope north of the border. Gretna Green is the first Scottish village travellers encountered on the historic London to Edinburgh coach route. In addition, "irregular marriages” were permitted – so anyone could carry out the wedding ceremony provided two witnesses were present. As the village forge was the first building elopers came to, and the weddings were carried out by blacksmiths (for a fee), these ceremonies came to be known as “anvil weddings”.

This charming archive includes a postcard signed by Richard Rennison, one of the most prolific of the so-called “anvil priests”.

Rennison has signed “Married 2362 couples, R. Rennison”.

That puts the date for this signature around the early 1930s. By the end of his career, in 1940, Rennison had married 5,147 couples.

Also featured is a blank marriage certificate signed by fellow “priest” Peter Dickson. A fascinating and romantic piece of British history.

      • A 3.2 x 5.3 inch signed photograph of escapologist Harry Houdini
      • This is one of the most iconic images of the star
      • Learn more about this item here

Harry Houdini (originally Erik Weisz) was a Hungarian-American magician, escapologist and master of self promotion. He started his career with traditional sleight of hand, but his execution was clumsy compared with his peers. Always fascinated with locks, he began experimenting with escapology. As his reputation for daring grew, so did his audience. He was one of the world’s most celebrated performers from 1899 to his death in 1926.

This attractive postcard-sized photograph shows Harry Houdini in an iconic pose and festooned with locks and chains - one of his most famous tricks.

Houdini has signed across the centre in black ink, a large and bold autograph with enormous presence.

There has been some fading to the photograph, almost inevitable given its advanced age, but the image remains clear. The autograph stands out clearly against the backing.

The image dates to 1902 and it's likely Houdini would have signed it around the same time.
