    Leon Trotsky Autographed Letter

    £4,950.00

    • Typewritten letter from Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky showing a superb example of his autograph
    • Contains references to some of the most important people and events in his life

Leon Trotsky was a Russian marxist revolutionary and theorist, who played an instrumental role in the 1917 revolution and servied as the founder and commander of the Red Army. However, he soon came to oppose Joseph Stalin's policies during the 1920s and was later exiled to Mexico, where he was assassinated on Stalin's orders.

His memorabilia is of great historical importance and, with the rise of Russia's middle-class, is becoming highly sought after as more collectors join the market. Those pieces that are not already housed in institional collections are quickly snapped up by private collectors.

This one page typed letter is written in French and signed by Trotsky. Measuring 7¼ x 11" and dated May 6, 1939, Trotsky writes to his lawyer, Gerard Rosenthal:

"We have received with delay the new copy of the letter of Jeanne Molinier concerning the documents and things left by Leon, the first copy of which had been burned on the 'Paris'

"All the precautionary measures will naturally be taken to ensure that the handing over of the documents be protected from possible attacks"

The Paris is an ocean liner that caught fire in April 1939. Leon was Trotsky's son (and husband of Jeanne Molinier) who died in a Paris hospital in 1938 following an unsuccessful appendectomy, some say as a result of Stalin's orders.

At the centre of the family conflict were bundles of documents belonging to Trotsky that were in Molinier's possession. The majority of these survived, and are now held in three major collections at Harvard University, Amsterdam's International Institute for Social History and Stanford University.

This letter serves as a who's who in Trotksy's life while in exile in Mexico. Rosenthal was his attorney and agent in Paris as well as a member of the French Bolshevik-Leninist movement.

An intriguing piece of correspondence which carries with it all of the mystery and intrigue of Stalinist Russia.

  • Lewis Carroll Handwritten Letters

    Paul Fraser Collectibles

Lewis Carroll Pair of Handwritten Letters

    £8,950.00

    • A pair of handwritten letters by one of the most influential writers of the 19th century.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), known more commonly by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was a renowned English writer, mathematician and photographer.

As Carroll he wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), its sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871), and the epic poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876), all of which are classic examples of the literary nonsense genre.

To date his works have sold millions of copies around the world, and have inspired countless adaptations on the stage and screen.

Dodgson was also a highly skilled amateur photographer, who took up the new art form during the 1850s and established his own studio, creating an estimated 3,000 photographs during his life.

In January 1877 Dodgson began a correspondence with Edward T. Draper, an agent for the Royal Marines and a fellow amateur photographer.

Draper sent Dodgson several photographs, including some of his 13-year-old daughter Dolly, telling him she was a fan of his books.

Dodgson then wrote in return to Dolly Draper, and struck up a friendship with the family.

These two handwritten letters are part of that correspondence.

Dodgson's first letter, dated February 5, 1877, included a photograph of himself and poked fun at his famous 'alter ego' of Lewis Carroll:

"Here is the portrait of the man I told you about. He is no relation of mine (but I have known him all my life)—at least, if he is a relation, I don’t know what sort of relation you would call him—He is about the same age as I am, but he certainly isn’t my brother, nor any kind of cousin."

The four-page letter is written across two adjoining sheets, and measures 3.25 x 5.25". In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip mark on the top of the front page.

In the second letter, dated April 12, 1877, Dodgson mentions sending Draper and her family copies of his most famous books, and also includes a piece of nonsense wordplay typical of his work:

"I think the only way to prevent you all forgetting me again…is to send each a copy of some one of my 3 books…I’ll tell you what I was thinking of sending…—For Jessie, Alice’s Adventures…for Roger, the Snark…& for you, the Looking-glass…

"With these helps, you may perhaps remember me for a while, but it will give a far better chance if you would put me in among your Modern History dates…—And then if even Roger says ‘Why, I don’t believe you care a fig for Mr. Dodgson,’ you can say ‘Ah, but I care a date for him!’"

The three page letter is written on two adjoining sheets, measuring 4.5 x 7", and is in fine condition. Dodgson's signature at the bottom of the letter has been clipped, and replaced with a facsimile.

Both letters are written in Dodgson's trademark violet ink, an unusual colour which he used for the majority of his correspondence throughout his life.

Additionally, the second letter is contained in its original folder from Walter Benjamin Autographs, the renowned US autograph dealership established in 1887.

Benjamin is recognized as playing a significant role is the development of the autograph collecting hobby in the late 19th and early 20th century, and the company continued to trade for 121 years.

Later typed copies of both the letters are also included.

    Louis XIV signed document

    £6,950.00

    • A 1701 document signed by Louis XIV (the Sun King)

Louis XIV (1638-1715) ascended to the French throne in 1643, when he was four years old. His reign lasted 72 years, still the longest in European history. France was the greatest power on the continent at this time. Under Louis’ reign, France greatly expanded its territory and influence. As a child, Louis adopted the sun as his own personal emblem. He came to be known as the Sun King. The symbol can be found throughout the city of Versailles and its lavish palace - which Louis created.

This large 9.5 x 14.5 inch document dates to May 1, 1701 and concerns the career of an officer in Louis XIV’s employ. The king signs at the bottom right. It's a large and impressive signature with enormous presence.

The condition is good, with some age related toning, soiling and spotting. It was, at one time, folded. None of these factors affects the quality of the signature.

  • Mahatma Gandhi's personal food bowl, fork and spoons

Mahatma Gandhi's personal food bowl, fork and spoons

    £75,000.00

    • Historically important metal food bowl, two wooden spoons and a wooden fork owned by Mahatma Gandhi, "Father of the Nation"

    • Used by Gandhi during his incarceration at Aga Khan Palace in Pune, as well as at the Palm-Bun house, Juhu Beach, Mumbai

    • Provenance from shipping magnate Sumati Morajee, owner of Palm-Bun house, who cared for Gandhi while there

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu (Father of Nation), was the pre-eminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and freedom across the world.

Gandhi is known in India as the Father of the Nation. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Gandhi's philosophy was not theoretical but one of pragmatism, that is, practising his principles in the moment. Asked to give a message to the people, he would respond, "My life is my message".

Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 while he was walking to address a prayer meeting.

Without doubt one of the most historically important collections we have ever had the pleasure of offering

A collection of eating utensils, comprising a metal food bowl, a simple wooden fork and two wooden spoons belonging to Mahatma Gandhi.

The food bowl measures approximately 2½" high by 8" in diameter and carries the stamped numbers to its base '208/42'. The spoons and fork are approximately 6½" in length. All items are in good condition.

The items belonged to Gandhi and were used by him at the Palm-Bun house, owned by shipping magnate Sumati Morarjee, at Juhu Beach, Bombay (Mumbai).

According to Morarjee family lore the utensils were used by Gandhi during his incarceration at the Aga Khan's palace in Pune from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, and then taken to their home at Juhu Beach.

Gandhi first visited the Palm-Bun house in 1915 after his return from South Africa. He also spent extended periods of time at the home, most notably in 1924 after his surgery for appendicitis and in 1944 after his release from detention at the Aga Khan's palace in Pune.

During both extended visits Gandhi was cared for by Sumati Morarjee, a close associate of Gandhi's who was actively involved in the underground movement for independence.

Morarjee is also known as the first woman of Indian shipping, and is credited as the first woman in the world to head an organisation of ship owners, the Indian National Steamship Owners Association. In 1971 she was awarded the second highest civilian honour of India for her civil services.

These items were subsequently kept by Sumati Morarjee at her home, in an unofficial museum. The items are documented in the book Sumati Morarjee Felicitation Volume (1970) and also in Vithalbhai Jhaveri's epic film biography of Gandhi.

Provenance: The collection of Sumati Morarjee.

An exceptional collection of Gandhi memorabilia.

Marilyn Monroe 'Happy Birthday Mr President' lock of hair

    £250,000.00

    • A large lock of Marilyn Monroe's hair, from the night she performed 'Happy Birthday Mr President' for John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden.

    • Accompanied by an instant photograph taken at the same event, bearing Monroe's lipstick kiss on the reverse.

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) needs little introduction. An actress, model and entertainer, she is perhaps the most recognisable of all screen icons.

As such, her memorabilia is highly sought after, and continues to be widely collected across the world.

History of the lock of hair

On the night of May 19, 1962, Marilyn Monroe gave one of the most famous performances of her career, during a celebration for President John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Monroe sang a sultry version of 'Happy Birthday Mr President' whilst wearing a virtually see-through dress, fuelling rumours of a secret affair with the President which have endured to this day.

Just hours before her performance, Monroe visited her personal hairdresser Robert Champion at the Coiffures Americana Beauty Salon, housed within the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue.

After he had cut and styled her hair, Monroe asked Champion to attend the event with her, so that he could touch up her hair and make-up just before she went on-stage.

Upon her arrival at Madison Square Garden, Monroe was presented with her outfit for the evening. Designed by Jean Louis, the highly revealing, flesh-coloured dress was covered in thousands of rhinestones, and was so tight Monroe had to be sewn into it, delaying her stage entrance.

Robert Champion recalled those moments before her performance:

"As we stood for a long time back stage at Madison Square Garden, she was very nervous about her appearance. I refreshed her lipcolor, powdered her nose, checked her blusher, and then she was announced again 'Miss Marilyn Monroe, better late than never.' In her very tight gown, she had difficulty ascending the make-shift stairs and I assisted her to the top where the spotlight hit her. The next is history."

    The lock

This large lock of blonde hair was trimmed from Monroe's head by Champion just prior to that iconic performance, and remained in his personal collection for decades.

The lock measures approximately 2.57" by 1.18" (7cm by 3cm).

It is accompanied by an instant Polaroid photograph of Monroe, taken at a party following the event.

The image captures Monroe smiling radiantly, perhaps in relief after getting through the performance, and bears her lipstick print in place of a signature on the reverse.

    Huge prices for Monroe memorabilia

For collectors, Marilyn Monroe remains the most sought-after of any star in Hollywood history, and her personal memorabilia regularly sells for seven-figure sums.

In December 2016, the dress worn by Monroe during her performance of 'Happy Birthday' sold at Julien's Auctions for $4.8 million, making it the second-most valuable dress ever sold.

The record is held by the famous white dress she wore in The Seven Year Itch, which sold in 2011 for $5.6 million.
