Two artist's sketchbooks by Maurice Feild

    £1,950.00

    • Two sketchbooks from artist Maurice Feild
    • More than 240 pages of sketches and notes from the 1970s

Maurice Feild (1905-1988) was a British realist painter and teacher with work in major collections, including the National Gallery and the UK Government Art Collection. He taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, a centre of excellence, for many years. One of his students, the painter Lawrence Gowing, described him  as "among the unsung influences on British painting”.

This is a pair of sketchbooks belonging to the artist Maurice Feild, an important figure in British realist painting. The red one measures 6 x 4.4 inches. The black one is 5.2 x 4 inches. Most of the drawings inside correspond to Feild’s regular themes and include portraits of children and landscape studies.

The quality is high throughout. Feild had an excellent eye and could convey a detailed scene in a few well chosen lines. This is an opportunity to acquire a large number of works from an underappreciated figure in British painting.

    Victor Hugo signed document

    £2,950.00

    • A document signed by Victor Hugo in vibrant blue ink

Victor Hugo is the author of some of the most celebrated works in French literature, including Les Miserables (1862) and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831).

Victor Hugo signed this 10.7 x 8 inch document while in exile in Jersey in 1852-1855. A staunch republican, he left France when Napoleon III seized power in 1851. The paper is connected with a society of French refugees on the island and is signed by several other names.

Hugo left Jersey for Guernsey in 1855, where he wrote Les Miserables.

Victor Hugo’s autograph is by far the largest and most prominent. He signs in deep blue ink – the “g” of his second name extending in a breathtaking loop. It’s a spectacular specimen and rare in this colour (Hugo tended to use black ink).

Walmart founder Sam Walton handwritten signed letter

    £995.00

    • A rare handwritten and signed letter from Walmart founder Sam Walton

Sam Walton (1918-1992) was the founder and driving force behind the US supermarket chain Walmart. Walton founded the first Walmart in 1962, in Rogers, Arkansas. Today there are more than 11,000 stores worldwide and it is the world’s largest retailer by revenue.

Walton is regarded as one of the pioneers of US retail. His new methods included volume selling, by buying at a low price and passing on the discount to his customers. In the mid-1980s he was the world’s richest man. Upon his death he willed more than $100 billion to his heirs.

Written on Walton’s “Memorandum from Sam Walton” letterhead, the 1983 letter reads:

“Donna – we’re ordinary folks – who have been lucky & worked hard.

    Best wishes & good luck.

    Sam Walton.”

Walton likely wrote the note in reply to a letter from Donna, asking for the secrets to Walmart’s success. Walton’s reply is typical of the man. He was celebrated for his humility, work ethic and love of people.

Measures 8.5 by 5.5 inches. Good condition. A minor crease runs vertically through the note. There are minor chips at the top edge.

Also featured is the letter’s original Walmart envelope, featuring a November 30, 1983 date stamp.

Walt Disney genuine vintage signed photograph

    £5,995.00

    • A beautiful black & white photograph signed by one of the 20th century's most important cultural icons

Walt Disney (1901 – 1966) was a celebrated voice actor, animator, film producer and entrepreneur who became an American cultural icon.

Having founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923, Disney rose to fame with the creation of Mickey Mouse and became a household name across the world.

As a producer he pushed the boundaries of animation, releasing classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Fantasia, along with the Oscar-winning Mary Poppins.

Disney currently holds the record for the number of Academy Awards won by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations.

In 1955 Disney also established Disneyland, the most successful theme park ever built, which to date has attracted more than 650 million visitors.

Walt Disney's films have entertained millions of viewers, influenced generations of film-makers, and Walt Disney Studios remains the most famous and successful entertainment company in the world.

This vintage black & white photograph features Walt Disney seated next to a large dog, and is signed and inscribed ""To Andy, All Best, Walt".

The photograph was inscribed to Andy Engman (1911 – 2004), a renowned animator who worked for Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California from 1937 until 1971.

He started his career as an uncredited 'In-Betweener' animator on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and later worked on Donald Duck and Goofy shorts, as well as features such as Fantasia and Pinocchio, before moving into management at the studio.

  • Walt Disney Signed Animation Cel

    Paul fraser collectibles

    Walt Disney Signed Animation Cel

    £11,995.00

    • An original production-used animation cel signed and inscribed by Walt Disney

Walt Disney (1901 – 1966) was an animator, film producer and entrepreneur renowned for creating Mickey Mouse and establishing one of the world's most famous film studios.

Disney is regarded as one of animation's greatest pioneers, and he produced landmark feature films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Fantasia.

Disney currently holds the record for the number of Academy Awards won by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations.

In 1955 Disney also oversaw the creation of Disneyland, the world's most successful theme park, which to date has attracted more than 650 million visitors.

Today Walt Disney is regarded as one of the most significant and iconic cultural figures of the 20th century.

This hand-painted gouache-on-celluloid animation cel was created for the film Melody Time, the 10th theatrically released animated feature produced by Walt Disney, released in May 1948.

It was the last anthology feature the studio produced, and featured seven short animations set to popular songs, in the same manner as the classic Fantasia.

This animation cel and background is taken from the segment Once Upon a Wintertime, and depicts two ice skaters dancing together, along with a pair of rabbits dancing behind them.

Once Upon a Wintertime's stylised backgrounds were created by Mary Blair, the highly influential Disney concept artist who worked on features such as Cinderella and Sleeping beauty, and who helped design the popular Disneyland ride It's a Small World.

The mount of the image is signed and inscribed "To Ann Shelton, All Best Wishes, Walt Disney", and is dated circa 1951.

Anne Shelton, OBE (1923 - 1994) was a British singer renowned for her work entertaining troops during WWII.

Shelton performed for soldiers throughout the war, touring military bases and hosting the radio show Calling Malta which was broadcast throughout Europe.

She later recorded several hit songs including ''Galway Bay' and 'Be Mine', which were also popular in the U.S and led to her touring America in 1951.

It's believed that Shelton acquired this animation cel as a gift from Walt Disney during that tour.

Disney's inscription and signature are signed in pencil. The image has been mounted, framed and glazed to an overall size of 39.3 x 43.7cm (approx. 15.4" x 17.2").

    William Wordsworth Autographed Poetry Quotation

    £3,995.00

    • A handwritten poetry inscription signed by one of history's most celebrated poets

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is one of history's most famous poets, and was a founder of the Romantic Age in English literature.

In 1798 Wordsworth and his close friend, poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, published their volume 'Lyrical Ballads', which inspired a generation of Romantic writers including John Keats, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Blake.

Wordsworth served as Britain's Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death in 1850, and is most renowned for 'Daffodils', one of the world's best loved poems, which begins with the line "I wandered lonely as a cloud..."

In this handwritten note, Wordsworth has inscribed four lines from the poem 'Old Age' by the 17th century poet and politician Edmund Waller:
    "The soul's dark cottage, batter'd and decay'd,
Lets in new light through chinks that Time hath made:
Stronger by weakness, wiser men become
As they draw near to their eternal home."

The note is signed "Wm Wordsworth", and is dated "6 July, 1839".

It also bears the address of Wordsworth's Lake District home Rydal Mount, where he lived from 1813 until his death in 1850, and which today remains a public museum dedicated to his life and work.

The page measures 17 x 20.3 cm (approx. 6.7" x 7.9"), and features a small tear to the upper left portion, along with two horizontal fold creases.

  • Winston Churchill Signed Document
    • A document signed by one of the most significant world leaders in 20th century history

Winston Churchill (1874 –1965) was a politician and statesman who twice served as British Prime Minister, and is regarded as one of the most influential people in British history.

Churchill led Britain to victory against Nazi Germany during WWII, with his regular speeches and broadcasts inspiring resistance against Adolf Hitler during the darkest days of the conflict.

In 1963 he became the first person to be declared an honorary citizen of the United States, and following his death in 1965 he was granted a state funeral by Queen Elizabeth II to mark his service to the nation.

In addition to his political career, Churchill was a renowned writer and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953.

He was also an accomplished painter, and his paintings remain highly sought-after by collectors today.

This document relates to the naturalization of a Russian immigrant and his family prior to WWI.

Certificates of Naturalization could be issued to any 'alien' who had lived in Britain for more than five years.

These applications were then signed off personally by the Secretary of State for the Home Office, a role to which Churchill was promoted in 1910.

At just 35 years old, he was the second-youngest politician in British history to ever hold the position.

The two-page document is dated September 16, 1911, and bears Churchill's signature on the second page.

The document includes pencil annotations in the top right corners of both sheets, and has minor soiling.

Also included is a collection of 15 original wartime press photographs featuring Winston Churchill on several occasions.

The black and white photographs come in different sizes, and feature their original press captions pasted onto the rear.

A superb collection of items relating to the 20th century's 'Greatest Briton'.
