    • A large lock of Marilyn Monroe's hair, from the night she performed 'Happy Birthday Mr President' for John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden.

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) needs little introduction. An actress, model and entertainer, she is perhaps the most recognisable of all screen icons.

As such, her memorabilia is highly sought after, and continues to be widely collected across the world.

History of the lock of hair

On the night of May 19, 1962, Marilyn Monroe gave one of the most famous performances of her career, during a celebration for President John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Monroe sang a sultry version of 'Happy Birthday Mr President' whilst wearing a virtually see-through dress, fuelling rumours of a secret affair with the President which have endured to this day.

Just hours before her performance, Monroe visited her personal hairdresser Robert Champion at the Coiffures Americana Beauty Salon, housed within the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue.

After he had cut and styled her hair, Monroe asked Champion to attend the event with her, so that he could touch up her hair and make-up just before she went on-stage.

Upon her arrival at Madison Square Garden, Monroe was presented with her outfit for the evening. Designed by Jean Louis, the highly revealing, flesh-coloured dress was covered in thousands of rhinestones, and was so tight Monroe had to be sewn into it, delaying her stage entrance.

Robert Champion recalled those moments before her performance:

"As we stood for a long time back stage at Madison Square Garden, she was very nervous about her appearance. I refreshed her lipcolor, powdered her nose, checked her blusher, and then she was announced again 'Miss Marilyn Monroe, better late than never.' In her very tight gown, she had difficulty ascending the make-shift stairs and I assisted her to the top where the spotlight hit her. The next is history."

    The lock

This large lock of blonde hair was trimmed from Monroe's head by Champion just prior to that iconic performance, and remained in his personal collection for decades.

The lock measures approximately 2.57" by 1.18" (7cm by 3cm).

It is accompanied by an instant Polaroid photograph of Monroe, taken at a party following the event.

The image captures Monroe smiling radiantly, perhaps in relief after getting through the performance, and bears her lipstick print in place of a signature on the reverse.

    Huge prices for Monroe memorabilia

For collectors, Marilyn Monroe remains the most sought-after of any star in Hollywood history, and her personal memorabilia regularly sells for seven-figure sums.

In December 2016, the dress worn by Monroe during her performance of 'Happy Birthday' sold at Julien's Auctions for $4.8 million, making it the second-most valuable dress ever sold.

The record is held by the famous white dress she wore in The Seven Year Itch, which sold in 2011 for $5.6 million.

Earlier that day Marilyn visited her hairdresser Robert Freeman Champion at Bergdorf Goodman on New York's Fifth Avenue. This Marilyn Monroe strand comes from that cut.

Mr Champion then accompanied Marilyn backstage at the event in the evening where he refreshed her lip colour, and powdered her nose, before she walked on stage.

Martin Luther King Jr signed and inscribed card

    £4,950.00

    Sold out
    • An extraordinary Martin Luther King Jr signature
    • Accompanied by an inscription bearing an original quote

Georgia-born preacher Martin Luther King Jr was the de facto leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, the Birmingham Campaign (1963) and the March on Washington (1963). It was in the nation’s capital he gave his iconic I Have a Dream speech. King was shot dead by a white supremacist in 1968. He continued to be a defining influence on the movement.

This is a 3 x 4.7 inch card bearing an inscription and signature from Martin Luther King Jr. It’s dated May 13, 1957.

King writes: “Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. He who loves is a participant in the being of god. Best wishes.”

A variant of this quote appears in Paul’s Letter to American Christians, a sermon King gave at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in 1956. He said in that speech: “love is the most durable power in the world, and that it is at bottom the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. Only through achieving this love can you expect to matriculate into the university of eternal life.”

Quality signatures from King are rare and increasingly in-demand. This is a specimen of tremendous power that highlights King’s skill as a writer and orator.

The card is affixed to a backing, with a raised section to the top right that doesn't detract from its appeal. An original stamp from the Montgomery Improvement Association, the group that prefigured the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, accompanies the item.

Michael Jackson Authentic Strand of Hair

    £999.00

    • A guaranteed genuine half inch strand of Michael Jackson's hair

Michael Jackson (1958-2009) is remembered as one of the great performers of all time. He began his musical career in 1964 as member of family band the Jackson 5. He was six years old at the time. By 1971 he was working as a solo artist.

Towards the end of the decade his sound changed from the soul stylings of his younger years. Off the Wall, released in 1979, was the record that established him as one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. Three years later Thriller (1982) pushed him into superstardom.

This is a guaranteed genuine half inch strand of Michael Jackson's hair from the infamous 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot when his hair caught fire during a pyrotechnic accident.

Ralph Cohen, executive producer for the Pepsi commercial, was among the first to aid Jackson.

Cohen threw his Armani jacket over Jackson's head to help extinguish the flames. On removing his jacket Cohen found Michael's hair attached to it.

The provenance and authenticity of this Michael Jackson hair is impeccable, including the highly publicised video showing Ralph Cohen using his Armani jacket to extinguish Michael's hair.

    • Worn by Schumacher during the July 25, 1993 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Michael Schumacher is a former racing driver, best remembered for his phenomenal run with Ferrari between 1996 and 2006. He holds the record for the most F1 championship titles – seven between 1994 and 2004.

Before he was the invincible champion of motorsport, Michael Schumacher was a plucky up and coming driver with Benetton-Ford.

He wore this yellow team racing suit in the July 25, 1993 grand prix at Hockenheim, Germany. It displays embroidered sponsors' patches and a belt with Schumacher's name and the German national flag.

"M.SCHUMACHER" is also inscribed on the interior. The garment features the usual wear for items of this type. The provenance is excellent. Schumacher personally gifted the piece to his then PR company, Extract.

The Hockenheim race was the 10th round of that season's Grand Prix.

Schumacher finished second, losing out to Williams-Renault driver Alain Prost. Schumacher finished the championship in fourth place.

This was the year before Schumacher's breakout as a racing driver. In 1994, he became World Champion for the first time.

Michael X (1933-1975) born Michael de Freitas, was also known under the alias Michael Abdul Malik. A Black Power leader in 1960s Britain, de Freitas made his living from the numerous brothels he ran in London.

When his cousin Joseph Skerrit botched an arms deal, de Freitas brutally murdered his relative and buried him in the garden of his commune.

After another flight, he was apprehended in 1975. He was executed in Port of Spain.
