HMS Victory flag fragments auction for $42,000

Two fragments of flag flown by Lord Nelson's HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar have sold for $42,071 in a single lot.

The 1805 battle was Lord Nelson's finest, and final, hour; the British defeated the French despite losing the great admiral, who died from a gunshot wound.

Displayed in a locket, the one-inch diameter pieces were once part of a flag famously torn apart by Nelson's devoted crew following its part in his funeral procession in London.

Despite the strong auction performance, it is still possible to obtain rare, fully authenticated Lord Nelson pieces of memorabilia at more modest sums.

We are currently able to offer the Trafalgar Collection. Priced at just £1,950 (approx. $3,190), this superb display item includes a piece of wood from the HMS Victory, a fragment of the ship's flag, a portion of Nelson's handkerchief and a strand of the admiral's hair.

Nate D Sanders' December 17-ending online auction also featured the $61,599 sale of a blanket present in the presidential limousine when John F Kennedy was assassinated.
