'Last of the Old Masters' Goya's £16,000 folio appears in Paris auction

Why are Old Masters paintings among the best investments on the art markets? Well, the expert Johnny Van Haeften perhaps said it best...

"[The paintings'] values have gone up and up and up, largely because of the laws of supply and demand," he comments in this video interview. "Supply is inevitably limited."

In fact, Old Master paintings have becoming increasingly scarce on the markets over recent decades. So imagine what a work by an artist described as 'the last of the Old Masters' could be worth...

You'll have an opportunity to find out at the second part of Kapandji Morhange's Books, Comic Books and Autographs sale in Paris on Friday 21 of this month. Online bidding is also available.

A sketch from the sixth edition Goya folio (€14,000-16,000)

Among the sale's highlights is small folio of illustrations by none other than Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), regarded as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the Moderns.

The lot comprises a complete suite of 80 plates, engraving, etchings and aquatints by the Spanish romantic painter and printmaker regarded as a chronicler of his era.

Although the folio is a sixth edition - including Plate 19, which is unique to this edition - with a "slightly stained" cover, Goya's place in history means it carries an estimate of €14,000-16,000.

Kapandji Morhange's sale offers collectors a very rare opportunity to invest in scarce works by a world renowned Old Master. Watch this space for more news on the sale.
