Dennis Hopper's Warhol 'Monroe' portrait could bring $60,000 at Christie's

As we've previously reported, the late Dennis Hopper's famed 'wild man' lifestyle even extended to his art collecting - as evidenced in bullet holes decorating his Andy Warhol portrait of Chairman Mao.

Billed as a "collaboration" between Hopper and Warhol, the piece shot at by Hopper will auction at Christie's New York estimated at $20,000-30,000 on January 11-12.

But that isn't the only Warhol classic selling from Hopper's collection at Christie's. Also on offer is an example of what his arguably the Pop Art pioneer's most iconic image: "Marilyn: one plate (F. & S. II.27)," a screen print in colours dated to 1967.

Three icons: Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol, once owned by Dennis Hopper

Produced on wove paper at Warhol's famous factory studio during the artist's heyday, the piece is signed and dated in pencil on the reverse, and numbered 120/250. (According to Christie's, there were also 26 artist proofs).

Published by Factory Additions, New York, and measuring 36 x 36 inches, the work will appear at Christie's with a substantial $40,000-60,000.
