    • A 1980 first day cover signed by Mother Teresa

    Mother Teresa was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in the city of Skopje in what is now North Macedonia. In 1928 she became a nun, moving to Ireland to join a Catholic order. After learning English she was sent to India where she began working as a teacher. Arriving in Kolkata she was shocked by the poverty around her and started the organisation Missionaries of Charity. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and a sainthood in 2016.   

    A first day cover of the Indian 1980 Mother Teresa issue bearing a Loreto House date stamp. Below is a signature from Mother Teresa inscribed with the words “God bless you”. The piece was issued to commemorate Teresa’s 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.  A rare and unusual piece of philately that is also a 3rd class relic, having been directly touched by a saint.

    1930 Series of thirty-six stamp-size die proofs in black on glazed card for the 1931-40 'Arms' postal fiscal issue, affixed to two ledger pages (numbered '261' and '262') and headed 'NEW ZEALAND / STAMP DUTIES', each proof handstamped 'CANCELLED' in RED and numbered below, arranged in groups according to the different side-panel designs as follows:

    'DESIGN No. 1' commencing with an original undenominated master proof for the whole series with uncleared value tablets and side-panels, a master proof showing side-panels, 'SIXPENCE' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and four completed proofs for the 1s3d, 2s6d, 7s6d and 12s6d values;

    'DESIGN No. 2' comprising two master proofs showing side-panels, 'SHILLINGS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and eleven completed proofs for the 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 15s, 25s, 30s and 35s values;

    'DESIGN No. 3' comprising master proof showing side-panels, 'TEN SHILLINGS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and three completed proofs for the £2.10, £3.10 and £4.10 values;

    'DESIGN No. 4' comprising master proof showing side-panels, 'POUNDS' at foot and uncleared value tablet at top, and ten completed proofs for the £1, £2, £3, £4, £5, £6, £7, £8, £9, £10 values;

    'DESIGN No. 5' comprising two master proofs showing side-panels and undenominated value tablets at top and foot (one with uncleared value tablets and the other with cleared value tablets, this last intended to allow the production of additional values via locally produced duty plates, as with SG 700, 825 and F212/6).

    Although the stamps were printed by the Govt Ptg Office, Wellington, the original dies and plates were produced by the Royal Mint.

    A unique and magnificent series of the utmost importance, never previously available to collectors.

    From the recently discovered proof book presented to Royal Mint engraver H.A.Richardson on his retirement (when the red 'CANCELLED' handstamp was applied).

    [The Postage Stamps of New Zealand vol 1, pp.514-5 refers to the Royal Mint engraving steel dies and making 32 electrotype plates. This probably relates to 28 denominated values, and four partly denominated ('AND SIXPENCE', 'SHILLINGS', 'TEN SHILLINGS' and 'POUNDS') values.

    N.B. It should be pointed out that the reverses of the two ledger pages remain intact, and comprise '260' with nine Irish 'income tax' die proofs and '263' with an important range of twelve NZ 1938 postal stationery die proofs, each with the same 'CANCELLED' handstamp.]

    New Zealand 1935 (1 May) 'Second Pictorial' die proofs (SG559/69). 1935 (1 May) 'Second Pictorial' 2d, 2½d, 4d to 8d, 1s, 2s, 3s, nine values, De La Rue stamp-size die proofs in issued colours on thick slightly surfaced unwatermarked wove with 2mm margins and part original gum.

    Couple of trivial blemishes mentioned for accuracy (1s with small corner thin, 3s with minor split at top of frame due to pressure of printing), but a beautiful series of great rarity.

    [The ½d, 1d, 1½d and 3d values are not present; the 9d value of the set was printed by lithography by Waterlow, and does not exist in this form].

    Newfoundland 1859 (Cover) SG4 St John's to Baltimore. 1859 (AP 1) outer wrapper from St Johns to Baltimore, 'Tucker' correspondence, endorsed 'pr Mail via Halifax', franked by 1857-64 4d scarlet-vermilion, good to very large margins except a little close at foot, tied by light barred oval, with red despatch cds (overstruck by '5/BOSTON/BR.PKT.' entry cds dated 'AP 10') alongside.

    Vertical filing folds (clear of stamp and postmarks), but very fine for this usage, the stamp a particularly attractive example with lovely colour.

    Ex Bill Gross, Hubbard and Carey Fox with Royal Philatelic Society (1968) and V.G. Greene (2001) Certificates of Authenticity.

    Newfoundland 1927 (May 20) flown cover from St Johns to Italy, franked by 1927 (18 May) 60c black, type 87 'Air Mail/DE PINEDO/1927' opt in red (plated as pos. 39 of the setting of 50), tied by matching cancel, with Trepassey (MY 21 27) circular datestamp alongside. "ROMA/CETRO' (22 VI 27) machine backstamps. A fine example of this classic Airmail rarity. Only 300 were printed, of which 230 were used on correspondence. British Philatelic Association (2013) and Friedl (1980) Certificates. (Unitrade C4, cat $30,000 on cover). [NB This flight caused considerable excitement, as there had been an interval of four years since any flights had been made via Newfoundland, after the frenetic 1919-23 period. The stamps were overprinted while De Pinedo was still in New Brunswick, en route back to Italy as part of his pioneering 'round the Atlantic' flight in his flying boat 'Santa Maria II', via Cape Verde and South America. He landed at Trepassay on May 20th taking off again with the special mail on the 23rd, but had to ditch in the sea 200 miles west of the Azores. The flight resumed in June after repairs, via Lisbon and Barcelona, and finally arrived at Ostia on June 16th]. SG163

    Prince William, born 1982, is the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and second in line to the throne of the United Kingdom. He served with the RAF for four years from 2009-2013 before taking on his full-time royal duties.  

    A unique Prince William signature on a June 6, 2003 first day cover featuring four stamps bearing his likeness.

    The original owner of this signature acquired it at an event hosted by homeless charity Solas in Newport, South Wales in 2003. Homelessness is a cause close to William’s heart. He attended the event with his father, Prince Charles.

    While there, the owner quietly asked if he wouldn’t mind signing. It’s against royal protocol for the Windsors to autograph personal items, making this a fabulous rarity. It's accompanied by a letter of provenance and a photograph of the prince signing.

    A fine quality example of this stamp of historical significance with large part original gum. This stamp is particularly rare in unused condition, and this one is much above average condition making it an important rarity.

    There are many forgeries of the Mafeking overprints, many of which were brought home by soldiers returning from the Boer War.

    To provide complete peace of mind in this respect, this stamp is accompanied with an independent certificate of authenticity from the British Philatelic Association (2015).

    Tristan Da Cunha 1929 stampless cover to the USA, carried on board the 'Halesius' which arrived at Tristan Da Cunha on 24 May, with two very fine strikes of the rare type Va cachet in magenta (as type V, but without break in inner ring, and damaged 'T', 'C' and 'N'), 'T' in circle between.

    Also a London paquebot transit circular date stamp dated '26 JU 29' at the upper right, and a 'New York Due/ 10 / CENTS' paired circles at lower left. 'JUL 8 1929' receiving H/S on reverse.

    Trivial peripheral blemishes mentioned for accuracy, still superb.

    Probably the finest of the six covers (and the first to be discovered) recorded by Crabb, which mostly have faint strikes.

    Illustrated on p.195 of Crabb's 'The History and Postal History of Tristan da Cunha'.

    A fine example with strong colour and large part borders except at left, tied by blue crayon cross to neat cover (green envelope) from Rev Martin Hall to Archdeacon Walker at Namirembe. Typical cover folds (almost certainly indicating carriage of mail by cleft stick) but choice quality for 'missionary' cover.

    Very rare, being one of only ten covers recorded with the November 1895 issue, from a total population of just 21 'typewritten' covers.

    Excellent provence, ex Trapnell, from the Walker family collection which preserved the Archdeacon's papers.
