St Helena 1922-37 3d bright blue, lower left horizontal pair with plate number '1', showing variety 'Cleft rock' on R5/1, SG101/c.
A very fine mint positional pair with original gum. Most importantly, the stamps are unmounted mint. Colour is wonderfully fresh and far above average for this stamp issue.
From the December 1922 printing of only 1,989 sheets and particularly rare in this form with the variety present.
This definitive issue first released in 1922 was designed by the St Helena-born Postmaster Thomas R. Bruce. It was similar to the 1912-16 pictorials, but instead of the Government House or the Wharf, these stamps showed the badge of St. Helena - a three-masted sailing ship near two large rocks.
