[NB This flight caused considerable excitement, as there had been an interval of four years since any flights had been made via Newfoundland, after the frenetic 1919-23 period. The stamps were overprinted while De Pinedo was still in New Brunswick, en route back to Italy as part of his pioneering 'round the Atlantic' flight in his flying boat 'Santa Maria II', via Cape Verde and South America. He landed at Trepassay on May 20th taking off again with the special mail on the 23rd, but had to ditch in the sea 200 miles west of the Azores. The flight resumed in June after repairs, via Lisbon and Barcelona, and finally arrived at Ostia on June 16th].

    Old Tom Morris signed photograph

Fantastic Old Tom Morris signed photo dated 1903

    For Sale: £12,000

Thomas Mitchell Morris (1821 - 1908) otherwise known as Old Tom Morris, was a Scottish golfer.

Morris was a pioneer of the game, and is widely regarded as "the father of golf".

Morris won the Open Championship four times, and struck the first ball at the first Open, in 1860 – a tournament he helped found. He remains the oldest winner of the Open (46) and his winning margin at the 1862 Open of 13 strokes remained a Major record until beaten by Tiger Woods (15) at the 2000 US Open.

Yet it is his achievements away from competition that many today regard as his greatest.

Because Morris is responsible for creating the game of golf we know today. As greenkeeper and professional, Morris transformed St Andrews from a primitive course to the stunning "home of golf" we know today, in doing so, transforming the standard for golf courses. Much of his best work can be seen on the greens, which were originally little more than what modern golfers would deem "rough". Continual weeding, sanding, rolling and mowing created the luxurious putting surfaces we see today.

In addition to revolutionary golf course design, many of his pioneering ideas have set the benchmark for today's game, including 18 holes as standard, tee boxes, metal rings in the holes, and active care of bunkers.

He designed or redesigned more than 60 courses in addition to St Andrews, including the famous Muirfield, Carnoustie and Royal Dornoch.

Old Tom Morris was also the father of Young Tom Morris, one of the most dazzling golfing talents of the 19th Century.

    The item

This is a superb black and white photo taken by James Patrick St Andrew, measuring 11" x 9¼" of Old Tom Morris on the links at St Andrews golf course, signed by Old Tom, and dated 1903. A tiny amount of fading to the signature but otherwise an incredibly well preserved 100-year-old photograph.

A major rarity. We have previously only handled one Old Tom Morris signed photo, measuring 6" x 4", which sold within hours of being offered at £4,000 in 1991!

The Holy Grail for the golf-collecting connoisseur.

  • Oliver Cromwell signed document
    Sold out
    Sold out
    • A 361-year-old vellum document featuring the incredibly rare signature of Oliver Cromwell

The man who changed British history. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1653 to 1658 – the first time in 800 years that England had not been ruled by a king.

Cromwell was one of the most vociferous opponents of Charles I’s rule and was second in command of the parliamentary troops against the royalists in the English civil war. Charles’ defeat, followed by his execution in 1649 (Cromwell signed his death warrant) saw Britain become a republic for 11 years.

Cromwell was succeeded by his son, Richard, as Lord Protector, following his death in 1658.

In 2002, Cromwell was voted among the 10 greatest Britons of all time in a 2002 BBC poll.

Oliver Cromwell has signed superbly and boldly “Oliver P”, for “Oliver Protector” in black ink on this 1657 vellum document. Cromwell signs this during the penultimate year of his pretectorship and just a year before his death.

Cromwell signed documents are incredibly rare on the private market and highly prized. Ones featuring a signature of this quality are almost unheard of.

The 9 x 5.75 inch document is the left portion of a manuscript instructing commissioners to make a payment from money received from a new tax on house building in London’s suburbs. The tax relates specifically to properties of less than four acres built since 1620. The letter dates to the last half of 1657 as the commission only began collecting the tax on 29 September 1657.

The recipients of the money mentioned include “Generalls at Sea”, a “William Smithyer” and Sir John Wollaston (d. 1658), who was an English merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1643. He was elected Alderman for the London ward of Bridge Without, to the south of London Bridge, in 1657.

The vellum document is in superb condition considering it is more than 360 years old.

Historic provenance from the esteemed manuscript collection of British collector John Walker (1674-1747), as detailed by a previous collector on a separate page that accompanies the document.

Comes with a full letter of authenticity from the most recent owner.

    Oliver Hardy Autographed Divorce Document

    £1,950.00

Oliver Hardy was an American comedian and actor, most famous for being one half of the popular comedy duo Laurel & Hardy. He's a central figure in the highly collectable Hollywood silent era. Any item from Oliver Hardy is coveted by collectors.

The document, which features some light toning and handling wear, covers Hardy's ex-wife's follow-up suit for more alimony following their 1937 divorce. Within the document, Myrtle Lee Hardy claims that Oliver had fallen short on the yearly payments that had been agreed upon in the original divorce case.

  • Original carpet Titanic movie

    Original carpet from Titanic movie

    £49.95

    • Original film prop: 1 inch x 1 inch piece of carpet from the Titanic movie

The 1997 Hollywood Blockbuster Titanic, directed by James Cameron, is the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time, netting $2.2 billion at the box office.

Making stars out of actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film went on to win a record 11 Oscars.

Titanic memorabilia is proving to be popular with collectors:

Winslet's famous red dress sold at auction in 2012 for $330,000, DiCaprio's jacket from the 'King of the World' scene sold for $60,000, and even director Cameron's hand drawn picture of a naked Winslet as 'Rose' auctioned for $17,000.

For those of us with less deep pockets we're delighted to offer these original movie props - a 1 inch x 1 inch square of original carpet from the first class dining room featured in the Titanic movie.

The carpet appears in the scene where Jack (DiCaprio) joins Rose (Winslet) and the other first class passengers for dinner.

In his pursuit of authenticity Cameron insisted that the carpet was made by the Scottish carpet manufacturer Stoddard, the maker of the original carpet that sailed on the Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912.

At just £49.95 (approx. $65) per square this makes for a wonderful piece of original movie memorabilia for a Titanic fan.

(NB: The image shows the small collection of carpet we have acquired. We estimate there will be approx 50 squares available in total).

  • Charles Lindbergh Spirit St Louis
    • One of the largest pieces of original Spirit of St Louis fabric ever offered for sale
    • Signed by Charles Lindbergh
    • Provenance from the collection of James E. Morrow - a member of the welcoming committee that greeted Lindbergh after his historic flight
    • Click here to read more about it

Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-1974), nicknamed Slim, Lucky Lindy and The Lone Eagle, was a pioneering aviator who began his illustrious career in the skies as an US Air Mail pilot.

At the age of just 25, he emerged from obscurity to capture the $25,000 Orteig Prize for his solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927.

The event rocketed him to international fame, and there was "tremendous public hysteria" in America. He was awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his legendary flight.

His fame meant that he was able to champion the development of commercial aviation and Air Mail services in the United States, making him one of the leading figures responsible for the progression of aviation technology at the time.

Following his son, Charles Jr, being kidnapped and murdered in the "Crime of the Century" in 1932 - a result of Lindbergh's fame - his family moved overseas. They returned as America joined the second world war, with Lindbergh flying numerous combat missions in the Pacific Theatre.

Following the second world war, Lindbergh styled himself as an explorer, inventor and prize-winning author, as well as an environmentalist - a truly remarkable man.

An extraordinary piece of aviation history.

An original piece of fabric from the famed airplane The Spirit of St Louis - among the largest ever offered for sale. The fabric measures approximately 2" x 3" and is signed 'C. A. Lindbergh' in fountain pen by world famous aviator Charles Lindbergh.

It is in fine, clean condition.

The fabric is dated "Sept 6 - 1927" in a separate hand. This indicates that it was signed by Lindbergh while in Montana. That same day, he flew from Butte to Helena, returning on September 7 for several days rest as part of his US tour funded by Harry Guggenheim.

The fabric would have been taken from the Spirit of St Louis during essential repairs carried out after landing.

While small pieces of the Spirit of St Louis have appeared at auction, it is rare to find examples of this size. Items signed by Charles Lindbergh are even rarer, and are extremely sought after by aviation collectors, making this the undoubted highlight of your collection.

    Provenance

The unusually large piece of cloth was acquired by James E. Morrow, a member of the welcoming committee for the triumphant American tour following Lindbergh’s historic flight.

Morrow was a relative of Anne Spencer Morrow, who became Mrs. Charles Lindbergh in 1929. James E. Morrow was also the name of Anne’s paternal grandfather.

Soon after Lindbergh’s return from France, millionaire aviation enthusiast Harry Guggenheim dipped into a promotional fund he had set up with his father, Daniel, to sponsor a nationwide tour for Lindbergh and the plane that he had made famous.

Over a three-month period from July to October 1927, Lindbergh flew and touched down the Spirit of St. Louis in all forty-eight states, gave hundreds of speeches, and rode in countless parades, where he was greeted as a conquering hero by unprecedented adoring throngs.

At the conclusion of the tour, Morrow presented the item to his daughter, Vera M. Morrow (1907–2004), who had earlier accompanied him to the legendary ticker-tape parade for Lindbergh in Manhattan on June 21, 1927.

This exceptional piece of aviation history is available on our layaway plan with the option to spread payment over 12-18 months.

Ralph Steadman (1936 - ) is a British artist & cartoonist best known for his work with American author Hunter S Thompson, illustrating both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Loathing on the Campaign trail '72.

Their 40 year friendship included coverage of the Watergate Scandals and numerous articles in Rolling Stone magazine for which Steadman still holds the position of Gardening Correspondent.

Through his relationship with Thompson, Steadman has become a hero of America's counter culture and a godfather of 'Gonzo' journalism, making their readers look at the world through the same "skewed, booze sodden, drug-addled prism"

Steadman has also illustrated classics such as Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland (for which he won the Francis Williams Illustration Award) and Robert Lewis Stevenson's Treasure Island.

He is also a prolific artist who has produced thousands of groundbreaking and influential artworks over his 40 year career.

This 18½ x 11cm white card features an original pen drawing of Charlie Chaplin by Ralph Steadman. Steadman has signed and dated the piece "2009". The piece is quintessentially Steadman with long sharp pen strokes.

Why Chaplin? In 1999 Steadman was commissioned by the Royal Mail to produce a design for a 64p Charlie Chaplin postage stamp for a series of stamps titled 'Entertainers'. Others in the series included a 19p featuring Freddie Mercury by Peter Blake a 26p featuring Bobby Moore by M White, and a 44p Dalek (Doctor Who) by Lord Snowden.

Steadman's artworks are increasingly popular with collectors. A limited edition print, one of 65, sold for $4,000 way back in 2004. 11 years on we are asking just £2,500 ($3,875) for this ORIGINAL artwork.

A great opportunity for a fan of Gonzo journalism, an art collector, or a postage stamp collector. It would make your collection unique!

They are thus rare, but as they were almost all used to make jewellery because of their attractively large size, it is doubly rare to find one unmounted or pierced such as this ! Osman III's brief reign saw rising intolerance of non-Muslims (Christians and Jews being required to wear distinctive clothes or badges) and is also notable for a fire in Constantinople. Outlaw Frank James handwritten letter

    £9,500.00

    • A touching handwritten love letter by one of the most legendary outlaws of the Old West, Frank James
    • Find out more about this item here

Frank James (1843 – 1915) was a U.S Civil War Confederate guerrilla and notorious Old West outlaw.

Together with his younger brother Jesse James, he helped established the James-Younger Gang, which robbed banks, trains, and stagecoaches throughout the southern states.

The gang cultivated a reputation as folk heroes, with help from the editor of the Kansas City Times, who published Jesse James' letters and proclaimed him to be a modern-day Robin Hood.

The gang's spree of robberies and murder lasted from 1866 until 1876, when several members were killed or captured during a disastrous raid on the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota.

Frank James retired from his life of crime soon after, but his brother Jesse struggled to adapt to normal life, and formed a new gang which continued to operate for several years.

Following the murder of Jesse by fellow gang member Robert Ford in 1882, Frank James feared for his own life and surrendered to the authorities, stating:

"I have been hunted for twenty-one years, have literally lived in the saddle, have never known a day of perfect peace. It was one long, anxious, inexorable, eternal vigil."

He was tried for his roles in two robberies/murders in Missouri and Alabama, and was acquitted in both cases, before returning to Oklahoma to live with his family.

For the next 30 years Frank James held a variety of jobs, including a shoe salesman, an AT&T telegraph operator and even a ticket taker in a burlesque theatre.

He also gave public lectures on the Old West, invested in Buckskin Bill's Wild West Show, and gave tours of the James family farm, where he eventually passed away in 1915 at the age of 72.

    Frank James and Ann Ralston

The story of how Frank James first met Ann Ralston remains somewhat of a mystery.

She was the highly-educated daughter of a wealthy businessman, and was working as a teacher when she suddenly eloped with James in the summer of 1875.

Her parents received a letter which read simply "Dear Mother: I am married and going West. Annie Reynolds", and were distraught at her disappearance.

It wasn't until several months later that they discovered their new son-in-law was one of the country's most wanted men.

In 1876 Ann's father arranged for a New York newspaper article about the marriage, to ensure his family was not linked to the criminal gang

"The James brothers, who are, with the Younger boys, creating so much stir just now, have had a love scrape, or at least one of them has. But this love affair is different from all other love affairs. No one who knows anything of the career of the James brothers would expect them to woo, win and marry like other people...

"Mr. Ralston has had no connection or communication with the train robbers whatever. His daughter he has not seen since she left home, a year and one month ago.

"If she is alive she will not write home, lest her letters should guide the officers to her husband's retreat. If she was dead Frank James would have notified her parents. So they can only rest patiently in the uncertainty of perhaps seeing their daughter again."

Ralston never returned home, but despite the dramatic nature of their courtship and Frank's life of crime, they maintained a happy and stable marriage.

They had a son, Robert Franklin James, and following Frank's surrender and subsequent acquittal for murder in 1883, they remained together until his death in 1915.

Ann Ralston James lived out the rest of her days on the James family farm, before passing away in 1944, and the couple's ashes were buried together at Hill Park Cemetery in Jackson County, Missouri.

    The letter

The letter, dated July 7, 1883, was written by James to his wife whilst he was in jail in Gallatin, Missouri.

James was awaiting trial for murder and robbery of the Rock Island Line train at Winston, Missouri, in which the train engineer William Westfall and a passenger Frank McMillan were killed.

Having spent a year in custody, James' trial began on August 20, and lasted just three days, before the jury returned a resounding verdict of 'not guilty'.

The tender love letter reveals James to be both highly romantic and highly literate.

Although he lived much of his life as a violent outlaw, he had been raised as a preacher's son surrounded by books, and during his youth developed a love for the works of Shakespeare.

James was said to always carry a book in his saddle bag, even when he was on the run from the law, and he shared this passion for literature with Ann throughout their 40-year marriage.

    Here's the text in full:

    My dear wife,

Your dear letter of the 1st was handed to me not exceeding an hour ago. It arrived here on the third, at least it is as marked. Now I sent foreword .. in this manner. There are very few men in this world that care anything for their wives, that they naturally suppose that all men are alike.

How badly they are deceived. If there is anything on this earth that is half as dear to me as my wife I have failed to find it. You are everything to me and the only living human being that has ever possessed my whole love, my entire confidence, the only one that ever will and I feel as that love and confidence will never be abused.

I have lived as I think to see all my fondest hopes realised. Long years ago I hoped and prayed that god would give me a true woman for my wife and i feel as if he has done so and anyone who has had a chance for happiness in this belief is more fortunate than the possessor of a thousand worlds.

I am trying to pass the time reading and writing - I regret that I am deprived of your beauty and I am writing to suffer that I have no visitors as told you in last.

Enclosed I send you an editorial from the trenchant pen of Rob M Yast that I think a grand effort.

I suppose you remember the circumstances of Jarvis shooting Englehart. Yast talks of love and forgiveness & Jarvis has shown that he possessed both - as also has Yast. He’s shown himself to be a true friend of me and mine.

Yast seems a man of most liberal whims. I dare say nine out of every ten would say that they would not forgive Jarvis for what he has done. Yet if it is the means of reclaiming the human I don't think he will ever regret it.

Regarding mamma, this may not be interesting to you but it has been to me. I had a letter from ma today, she feels disappointed as you did not visit...

I supposed it was useless to ask you again so will end further requests. I also had one further service. she also sends her kindness in regards to you and asked why you did not write. Please write her and let her know I will write Monday again.

When you write, write me care of Sherriff - I don’t think he will read them.

He has not opened any of my letters for a long time and if he should that would be better than not to get them so long after they’re written. I will kiss you both good night - write often your loving Ben/ f**k it is raining hard at this time.

James autographs the letter as 'Ben', a protective alias that he used when writing to his loved ones.

The single page letter, with text on both sides, measures 203 by 126mm, with fold creases and bleeding of ink in some sections.

A remarkable piece of history, which offers a personal insight into one of the Old West's most legendary figures.

Paul Signac four pages of sketches

    £8,950.00

    • A fascinating four-sided, two-page manuscript of sketches by one of the most significant French artists of the 20th century, Paul Signac
    • Find out more about this piece here

Paul Signac (1863-1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who developed the style of Pointilism along with George Seurat.

Signac worked alongside many of the greatest artists of the era, including Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Camille Pissarro and Odilon Redon, and shared a close friendship with Vincent van Gough.

In 1884 Signac was one of the four founding members of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, an association which hosted major exhibitions and set important artistic trends for more than three decades.

He also wrote several important works on the theory of art, and throughout his life served as both an inspiration and a patron to younger artists.

This four sided manuscript features a series of pencil drawings and sketches, along with lengthy annotations in French which offer an insight into Paul Signac's artistic process.

The rough illustrations on page one of the manuscript include notes referring to colours and background scenery of a possible future work:

"Opposite a white palace, with pink line, harmony in pink, with green blinds… Communal Palace.. retouching Gozzoli virgin fresco…blue background…"

The second side features four individual sketches, with figures and religious imagery such as a virgin and an angel. These scenes are accompanied by notes, which read in part:

"The small virgin in white,…right wall with chorus, landscape with sun, white, pink…a clown scene with the dog and cat under the bed...the chapel of St. Martin…"

The third side includes a lengthy annotation which reads in part "...the dry aspect that the murals research and the shapes can achieve…", along with a quick line sketch which is developed more fully on the fourth page.

This second version of the sketch depicts a small cottage on a shoreline, with a large cliff face rising up behind it.

Signac had a love of sailing, spending many summers throughout his life exploring the French coast, and the shorelines in the South of France – perhaps including this very scene - were amongst his most popular subjects.

Pete Doherty Autographed Original Blood Painting

    For Sale: £15,000.00

    • Original self-portrait blood painting from musician Pete Doherty
    • Autographed by the singer in his own blood
    • Excellent provenance - Doherty sent this to a fan following a show

Pete Doherty (1979-) is a notorious celebrity, famed for his high-profile relationship with Kate Moss and his addiction to crack cocaine and heroin. While a noted creative talent, regular court appearances and jail sentences have come to overshadow his musical and artistic pursuits.

Doherty was one of the founders of the acclaimed The Libertines, and also founded Babyshambles.

He published his journals, photography and poetry in 2007's The Books of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty.

    Description

Since 2007, Doherty's paintings have been made available to the public. Like his personal life, these paintings have caused controversy due to his use of human blood, mostly Doherty's own.

This canvas is a new discovery, never before offered on the private market.

This self-portrait shows Doherty smoking, wearing his trademark hat. The artist clearly understands his own iconography and deftly records his most identifiable image.

A flurry of smudged pencil, pen and blood create a broken, textured effect. The mixed media piece features a number of novel techniques; splattered blood and dripping blood.

A concentration of blood curves outwards from the eye, downwards in dripping, criss-crossing lines.

Above the head, drawn across the hat, Doherty has included a syringe in blue pen. The highest level of detail is afforded to this depiction, inferring the item's importance. The level of detail also suggests that the item was drawn from observation, rather than memory. A blue rectangle, with the number 20, depicts a £20 bank note.

The choice of a different media for the drawing of the syringe may suggest a separate phase of work on the painting. It may also depict two states of mind or two sets of concern of the artist; one which is the artist himself, and one which is his addiction.

    Provenance

A fan approached the singer at a gig in Wigan, 2010, and cheekily asked how he could make some money. Doherty said he would create a blood painting and send him £20; the money never arrived but the painting was sent a week later (with a drawn £20 note). The canvas measures 32" x 32".

The text "For Alistair, love Peter" features prominently over half the canvas. This personal note becomes part of the artwork as it is inscribed in blood.

A London gallery recently held a sell-out show of Doherty's work, demonstrating how sought after these paintings are.

Prices for the artworks varied from £2,500 for a signed print, to £50,000 for blood spattered canvasses. A painting created using both Doherty's and Amy Winehouse's blood recently sold for $56,000.

Included in the sale price is a colour photograph of Pete Doherty measuring 11¾" x 8¼" signed by the man himself.

Peter Force printing of the Declaration of Independence

    £60,000.00

    • A rare printing of the Peter Force Declaration of Independence
    • Still contained within Volume I of Force’s classic nine-part publication

Politician and archivist Peter Force (1790-1868) amassed one of the most extensive collection of documents relating to the American Revolution. He published his archives across nine volumes between 1837 and 1853 . The Library of Congress bought his full collection for $100,000 in 1867.

This is a rare copy of Volume I of the Fifth Series of Peter Force’s American Archives (1848), with a printing of the full Declaration of Independence still bound into the book. Many examples of this sought-after print have long since been removed and framed.

Force made the print from William J Stone’s original 1823 copper plate, produced on the orders of Congress, sometime between 1833 and 1848. However, his much-lauded American Archives were not a success. Only the Fourth and Fifth series entered publication and few buyers were prepared to pay the expensive subscription.

It’s estimated that Force printed 500 or fewer copies of the Declaration of Independence.

This is a rare opportunity to own the definitive printing of the founding document of the United States.
