Macallan 62 Lalique decanter could reach $41,000 at Bonhams

A selection of rare Scottish whiskies is to cross the block at Bonhams on October 1, including a Macallan 62 in a crystal Lalique decanter.

Numbered 220 of an edition of 400, the highly collectible lot is valued at £20,000-25,000 ($32,619-40,774) ahead of the London auction.

Macallan 62 is at the top end of the whisky market

Macallan is produced in the Speyside region of Scotland, home to a number of other well-known distilleries.

This particular dram, which had been aged for 62 years in an oak cask since 1950, is regarded as one of the world's finest whiskies.

Another example realised $33,500 at Bonhams New York last year.

The Macallan M Decanter, a Lalique-designed bottle containing six litres of the beverage, holds the world auction record for a bottle of whisky at $628,205.

Other lots in the sale include a Gordon & Macphail Generations Mortlach 70-year-old that carries an estimate of £20,000-22,000 ($32,619-35,881).

It's presented in a hand-blown glass decanter numbered 53 of 54.

Another Speyside whisky with a strong reputation, the taste is described by Bonhams whisky consultant Charles Maclean as: "Remarkable! No trace of damp wood or must or bung cloth - a delicate, fresh, vital, fruity whisky, but with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokieness - uncommon today, more usual before the 1960's."
