The festival of Durga Puja is a six day event devoted to worship of the goddess Durga. McDowell's No 1, one of the most popular brands of Indian Whisky has produced a limited edition to coincide with the event.

The new Litre & Quart pack will sport festive burgundy and gold colours, and will be available during August and September 2009 only.

McDowell's No 1 is owned by United Spirits Limited, the third largest distiller in the world. Like many brand names in India, 'McDowell's No 1' indicates that interest in whisky in India developed due to the influence of Scottish whisky.

"Friends come together especially during festivals to celebrate their friendship and have enriching moments together." said Mathew Xavier, business head of USL, "McDowell's No 1 is the epitome of friendship and hence the perfect companion for such joyous occasions."

The festival of Durga Puja became especially popular when associated with the Indian independence movement. Despite its inspirations, Indian Whisky is also a drink with its own unique character. Much of the drink is often made from fermented molasses, making it disputable whether it's truly a whisky or really a rum.

Limited editions are generally more collectible, although in the case of wine and whisky the desirability of the contents is all important. However, the production of a special edition like this may be seen as a sign of India's growing interest in whisky of all kinds amongst the wealthy.  ____________________________________________________________
