Bonhams' Edinburg whisky sale, held on October 2, has seen a single bottle of Ardbeg 1965 sell as top lot.

The Ardbeg whisky is said to be the peatiest in the world

The Scotch, produced in 1965 and bottled in 2005, sold in a glass presentation case accompanied by a boxed miniature. Numbered 47 of a limited production of 261, it brought £4,375 ($7,088).

The Ardbeg distillery is situated on the isle of Islay, Argyll and Bute in Scotland and is owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey. It is considered among the "peatiest" whiskies in the world.

Oldest Whisky Bottle
The bottle is not far off being one of the oldest in the world

The second highest bids of the auction were brought by an 1882 bottle of whisky produced by John Jameson & Son and bottled by Francis Falkner. Selling for £2,500 ($4,050), the bottle features a driven cork with a wax capsule embossed "Whiskey Francis Falkner, Dublin & London" on top.

The world's oldest bottle is the Glenavon Special Liquer Whisky, which was bottled between 1851 and 1858 and sold through Bonhams for £14,850 ($24,059).

No auction of fine whisky would be complete without an offering from The Macallan, with Bonhams selling a Royal Marriage bottle for £2,500 ($4,050). The whisky was distilled in 1948 and 1961, then bottled in 1981 to commemorate the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

In June 2012, three bottles of Pol Roger champagne that were set aside at Queen Elizabeth II's 1952 coronation and reserved for her 1977 Silver Jubilee sold at Bonhams for £1,610 ($2,464).
