Discus thrower Piotr Malachowski made the announcement on Facebook.

He wrote: "In Rio I fought for gold.

"Today, I appeal to everyone - let's fight together about something that is even more precious."

Well known investors Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk bought the medal for an undisclosed sum.

As far as we can determine, this is the first medal from the 2016 Games to have sold.

A gold from London 2012 made $45,577 at RR Auction in July.
