Selling as part of the Sports Collectibles Catalog Auction in Dallas, the medal is valued at $250,000.
The Miracle on Ice game, which saw the amateur US team face-off against the all-conquering Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics, is well remembered as one of top sporting moments of the 20th century.
Set against the tense backdrop of the Cold War, the US team - made up of college kids and semi-professionals - achieved a 4-3 win against the Soviets, who had won six of the seven previous Olympic tournaments.
Team USA proceeded to secure the gold medal against Finland. The story of "the miracle" was then made into a film in 2004, with Kurt Russell starring as coach Herb Brooks.
The medal isn't the first from the game to appear at auction, with another selling for $310,700 in November 2010. Team captain Mike Eruzione's jersey from the game saw $657,250 in February 2013 at Heritage.
The most valuable hockey item ever sold remains the $1.3m jersey worn by Canadian Paul Henderson in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. See our top five hockey jerseys ever auctioned.
