Queen Victoria mourning dress commands $4,500 estimate

Hansons Auctioneers will sell a black mourning dress worn by Queen Victoria in its June 28-29 auction in the UK.

Queen Victoria mourning dress
Queen Victoria's conspicuous mourning for her husband is legendary, with the monarch wearing black from his death in 1861 until her own in 1901

The silk bodice and skirt will sell with a modest £3,000 ($4,612) estimate, having been passed down through the family of a lady in waiting, who served the queen during her final years.

Victoria famously wore only black after the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861.

In July of last year, a complete mourning outfit worn by the long-reigning queen sold for £6,200 ($9,720), making a 210% increase on estimate.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has Queen Victoria's superb autograph on an appointment letter.
