A unique strip of four 1948 Gandhi stamps realised £500,000 ($640,100) in a private sale in the UK earlier this week.
The stamps were issued to commemorate Indian independence
Each of the stamps is marked SERVICE, indicating their reservation for the Indian government.
This is one of only two known multiples of this much-loved issue, which was printed to commemorate the first anniversary of India’s independence.
The other is a block of four held in the British royal collection. The present lot is the only multiple on the private market.
A single example of this issue achieved $205,000 at David Feldman in Geneva in 2011.
