This rather spectacular purple piano once belonged to pop icon Prince.
The piece was gifted to him in 1978 by Earth, Wind & Fire’s road crew and quickly became his favourite piano to compose on.
It’s set to feature in a February 8-15 auction of Prince memorabilia.
Prince used to compose songs on this piano
Prince is best known as a guitarist. As a result, his guitars have achieved some spectacular prices at auction since his death in 2016. In November last year, RR Auction sold a signature Blue Cloud for $700,000.
However, he was also a skilled pianist. Just before his death he went out on the road with the 2016 Piano & A Microphone Tour, performing his biggest hits alone on an empty stage.
As the Toronto Star put it in a review of the show: “It probably comes as little surprise that Prince, the legendary singer and songwriter who is as prolific as he is enigmatic, is as big a monster on piano, technically speaking, as he is on guitar.”
Meanwhile Prince’s handwritten script for his love it or hate it 1986 movie Under the Cherry Moon is offered with a valuation of $20,000.
The film was a spectacular bomb on its release, effectively ending his screen career, but over the years has undergone something of a revision.
Critics including the great Roger Ebert have since praised Prince’s captivating performance and unique sense of comic timing.
