French star Johnny Hallyday’s Iso Grifo A3/C is selling

The late French rock star Johnny Hallyday (1943-2017) had great taste in cars.

His 1965 Iso Grifo A3/C is heading to auction in RM Sotheby’s Paris sale on February 7.

Johnny Hallyday ISO

Johnny Hallyday bought this car new in 1965

Designed by Giotto Bizzarrini (Ferrari’s head engineer during the 1950s) and celebrated stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car features a rare duralumin body.

This alloy is light but tricky to work with and has to be riveted rather than welded.

Only 20 were built this way. Few are known to have survived in anything approaching driveable condition.

RM Sotheby’s specialist Augustin Sabatié-Garat says: “The offering of a riveted Iso Grifo A3/C is extraordinarily rare in its own right.

“Add to that its exceptional French provenance and former ownership by the late, and much loved, Johnny Hallyday, and you have a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors.

“We’re tremendously honoured to bring an important car owned by such a cherished French icon to public auction.”

Hallyday exploded onto the French music scene in 1960 with his hit track Laisse les filles (Leave the Girls).

He was one of the most popular French language stars in the world. Almost a million people lined the streets to pay their respects at his funeral in 2017, while millions more tuned in from around the world.
