A previously unreleased interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono is set to excite collectors at RR Auction's online sale, which closes on September 26.

John Lennon Interview auction
Lennon candidly discusses the end of the Beatles, an event that would be announced just months later in a Paul McCartney press release

The two reels will sell with a minimum bid of $300, but will undoubtedly rise to a considerable sum as their contents pique the interest of dedicated fans.

The interview was conducted in Toronto in 1969 by Howard Smith, a radio DJ and columnist for the Village Voice. With a running time of just over one hour, the tapes were previously buried in a crate in the back of Smith's New York City loft apartment.

John Lennon candidly talks about the Beatles' final years during the interview, revealing that during the making of Let It Be, the band's 12th and last-released album, the members "were going through hell".

When asked whether rumours that the band was to break up were true, he simply responds: "Ringo's left once, George has left once for a couple of days."

Lennon also talks about his political activism, including his famed "bed-in" in Montreal, as well as a failed peace festival due for the summer of 1970.

The interview tapes are one of over 100 lots of Beatles-related memorabilia in the sale, with the most valuable including an ultra rare first pressing first cover With the Beatles album, which has been boldly signed by each band member, and starts at $5,000.

Roughly 15-20 signed copies of With the Beatles are known to exist. Even rarer is our signed copy of A Hard Day's Night. It is one of just 8-10 known examples and is in fantastic condition.
