Star Wars R2-D2 unit smashes estimate in Hollywood sale

A complete Star Wars R2-D2 unit realised a massive $2.7m on the third and final day of Profiles in History’s Hollywood Auction.

That’s a major increase on its $2m valuation.

R2D2 complete Profiles

The R2-D2 is built from parts from the various Star Wars movies

This complete R2-D2 is made entirely from parts used in the original Star Wars movies and prequels.

The legs, for example, from this model originate from the Empire Strikes Back while the main part of the body is from Episode I (The Phantom Menace).

To date no complete screen-used R2-D2 has ever been offered for sale.

That's largely because no definitive example from one single movie exists.

The auction house explained: “A complete film used R2 unit is not known to be in the public domain – this R2-D2 offering represents the pinnacle of the Star Wars collecting universe…

“As filming progressed, R2 units were upgraded and refurbished, with outdated components being retired.

“This process has been confirmed by numerous crewmembers who worked on the Star Wars film franchise.”

One of the main costumes worn by Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in Titanic (1998) realised $192,000.

Jack Dawson was Leonardo DiCaprio's breakthrough role

It’s the most recognisable of several costumes DiCaprio wore in the movie, hence this exceptional result.

Day two of the three day sale saw the iconic light-up dance floor from Saturday Night Fever sell for $1m
