Lord of the Rings axe makes $180,000 at Beverly Hills auction

A battle-axe wielded by Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy hammered for $180,000 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills on December 5.

The axe was valued at $50,000-70,000 ahead of the high profile sale of Lord of the Rings props.

Actor John Rhys-Davies played the dwarf, who appeared in all three films of the trilogy. The axe is extremely heavy, and made from metal and wood, with a leather grip and ornate detailing.

Sting, the sword brandished by Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, made $156,000 against an estimate of $100,000-150,000 - an increase of 4%.

The sword appears throughout the trilogy, and features a number of nicks along the edge along with some fake blood residue that attests to its use on set.

It is made of lightweight aluminium, with acid-etched Elvish inscriptions and a resin handle covered with a lacquered vinyl transfer.

A sword used onscreen by Viggio Mortenson, who played Aragorn, achieved $62,500.

Also created from lightweight aluminium, it features similar indicators of onscreen combat.

All three weapons come presented in an acrylic case with a New Line cinema certificate of authenticity signed by the producer of the trilogy, Barrie Osborne.

We have this Ian McKellen signed photo in his role as Gandalf for sale at just 100 ($160) - the perfect Christmas gift for any Lord of the Rings fan.
