An auction of items belonging to the legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) is attracting huge interest in Stockholm.

The 377 Bergman items include a writing desk, film cameras and Golden Globe awards belonging to the director, according to the Associated Press.

Also going under the hammer are the chess pieces likely featured in Bergman's 1957 masterpiece The Seventh Seal and a 1960s portrait of Bergman by the renowned US photographer Irving Penn.

The auction will be held on September 28 by Bukowskis auction house.

The sale has drawn such huge interest that the limited-edition auction catalog has become a collector's item in its own right, said Charlotte Bergstrom, spokesperson for Bukowskis.

Prior to his death, Bergman insisted in his will that his assets be auctioned to prevent some, "kind of emotional hullabaloo."

Bergman remains among the most highly-esteemed of filmmakers.

Director Woody Allen described him as "probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera."
