Explorer Mungo Park's trunk valued at $43,500

A trunk carried by 19th century Scottish explorer Mungo Park during his travels in Africa is valued at $43,370.

The sale will take place at Dunbar Sloane in Auckland, New Zealand on March 28.

Mungo Park took the case on both his trips to Africa

Park (1777-1806) travelled extensively on the continent, becoming the first westerner to walk the course of the Niger river.

His book, Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa, was published in 1799.

He returned there in 1803, but drowned in 1806 while attempting to escape a hostile party of natives.

The majority of his effects were recovered and brought back to Scotland, although this trunk was taken to New Zealand by a descendent when they emigrated.
