Winston Churchill's resignation letter up for auction at $10,000

Winston Churchill's letter announcing his resignation as prime minister has been consigned to Nate D Sanders' March 27 online auction, where it is expected to do battle with a document signed by Adolf Hitler.

Winston Churchill typed signed letter
In the letter, Churchill names Anthony Eden as his successor, who served as prime minister from 1955 to 1957

The typed letter, one of the last signed by Churchill as the British PM, is dated 6 April 1955, at a time when Churchill's health was rapidly deteriorating. Bidding starts at $10,000.

Addressed to Conservative politician John Harvey, the letter reads: "ǪFor some time past I have not felt that at my age it would be right for me to incur such new and indefinite responsibilities I have therefore tendered my resignation to The Queen".

Churchill had suffered a severe stroke in 1953, and his speech and ability to walk were fast declining. By the time of the letter, he had served as Prime Minister for 11 years, between 1940 and 1945, and again in 1951-1955.

The auction includes a great range of royal and political memorabilia, led by a Princess Diana dress at $55,000. We have a great selection of affordable Princess Diana memorabilia.

Also appearing at Nate D Sanders is the original artwork for the Harry Potter books.
