Be very afraid... The Dark Lord of the Sith is set to make an appearance at Christie's London on November 25. A near complete and exceptionally rare Darth Vader costume will go under the hammer, estimated at £160,000-230,000.
The outfit was worn by British actor David Prowse in The Empire Strikes Back, the second film - and many fans argue the best - in producer George Lucas' iconic sci-fi saga. Today, Darth Vader remains one of the most recognisable and infamous characters in film history.
Vader's costume includes his original helmet and mask (which Lucas modelled on headgear of a medieval samurai), both of which are considered to have been production-made for The Empire Strikes Back. Selected second-generation pieces have also been added to the costume so that it appears complete for display purposes.
Don't mess with him... Darth Vader, or rather the costume, as featured |
The seller acquired the suit in 2003, and its provenance can be traced to the Star Wars film studios at the time of the movie's production.
Considering that it was likely featured in the oft-quoted scene when Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) voices his iconic "I am your father" line to the young hero Luke Skywalker, it's fair to say that film memorabilia doesn't get much better than this.
Fortunately, the seller apparently doesn't subscribe to the evil Galactic Empire's humanitarian policies, and will donate a percentage of the proceeds to benefit Cancer Research UK.
