A cased, factory engraved Colt 1851 Navy revolver sold for $337,000 at Bonhams' November 10 Fine Antique Arms auction in New York.

Colt sold around 250,000 Navy Revolvers between 1847 and 1873

Initially known as the Ranger, it became one of the company's most popular designs - selling around 250,000 units in the US between 1847 and 1873.

Some of the most famous gunslingers in history were Navy enthusiasts, including Wild Bill Hickock, Ned Kelly and Doc Holliday.
