Super-rare coins from the era of The King's Speech could make a mint this May

Recent Oscar-winning sensation The King's Speech celebrated King George VI's victory over a crippling speech impediment - and with appropriate timing, Baldwin's will be offering some beautiful coins celebrating his coronation.

The auctioneer's May 3rd-4th sale, to be held in London, features four gold, Matt Proof finish coins, minted in 1937 to commemorate the then Prince Albert's ascension to the throne.  In 1936, his older brother King Edward VIII abdicated after a high profile relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson - whose collectibles we reported on last week.

Albert, at that time the Duke of York, reluctantly took the throne, taking the name George in honour of his late father, King George V.  He reigned for 15 years until his death in 1952 - when his daughter Elizabeth became monarch.

The four coins are stunning and incredibly rare.  Still in their original Royal Mint case, they are thought to be one of only two commemorative sets struck with the experimental matt finish, designed to reduce the reflective properties of gold thus enhancing numismatic photography of the time.

These coins were designed as a pre-production set to be used for promotional purposes, and thus are one of the first sets minted.  The case also features an unusual black velvet pad - the inverse of the cream used for the brilliant proof sets issued in 1937.

These coins have not been offered at auction in decades and have been described as "the rarest gold numismatic item of the reign of King George VI".  These unique numismatic treasures have a high estimate of £110,000.

The timing of the sale is impeccable - not only has the profile of George VI been raised considerably by The King's Speech, but the approaching marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton is highly likely to make Royal collectibles very popular in the coming months.

This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for a serious coin collector or investor to acquire a truly rare and beautiful example of British numismatics and Royal memorabilia - an excellent two-for-one.
