Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot achieves $188,000

A 107.7 ounce Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America has sold for $188,000.

Gold ingot Humbert

This ingot is among the largest recovered from the wreck

It led Heritage Auctions’ Long Beach Expo sale on June 8-11.

The Central America was wrecked off the coast of the Carolinas in a storm in 1857. It was carrying an enormous cargo of gold, around 14,000 kg in all.

That gold remained on the sea bed until the late 1980s, when it was discovered by a salvage company. This ingot is among the largest recovered.
