A H Baldwin & Sons will hold its annual Hong Kong auction of Far Eastern and World Coins, Medals and Banknotes on April 3, starring a 1907 China Guangxu Ku'ping Gold Pattern 1-Tael.

The coin is one of two consigned from the collection of Swedish numimatist Ake Linden, which are both estimated at $80,000-100,000. A rare prototype coin, it was created in the 33rd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu, the 11th emperor of China's Qing dynasty.
Guangxu is known for the Hundred Days' Reform of 1898, which was a spectacular failure and brought a wave of displeasure from the Chinese public. The reforms also conflicted with the views of his regent, Empress Dowager Cixi, and she staged a coup with the Chinese military, imprisoning him under house arrest until his death in November 1908 - the day before Cixi died.
Also starring is an "extremely rare" 1907 Chihli (Peiyang) Province Silver Pattern 1-Tael, purchased by Linden from the $3.3m collection of Dr Norman Jacobs, which sold through Baldwin's in 2008.
However, the top lot of the auction will be paper money, with an original stapled bundle of 100 consecutive 100-rupee notes, issued in 1914 by the Reserve Bank of India, estimated at $120,000-150,000.
Paul Fraser Collectibles has a spectacular selection of rare coins for sale.
