A California couple have discovered a major hoard of mint and uncirculated US gold coins dating to the mid to late 19th century near their home in Sacramento.

The find - referred to as the Saddle Ridge Hoard - is estimated to carry a value of around $10m, making it one of the most significant discoveries of its kind in American history.
It consists of around 1,400 gold dollars ranging in value from $5-20, the majority of which were minted in nearby San Francisco. The original owners of the mysterious hoard remain unknown.
