Broad range of rare US gold and silver coins will sell today

More than 500 lots of rare coins are to be offered later today by Stephenson's Auctioneers.

The broad range for sale includes large number of Morgan and Peace silver dollars, notably the 1882, 1883, 1884 and 1890 Carson City varieties. The half dollars are led by 30 Liberty head coins.

Amongst the US gold coins are an 1899 $10 piece, as well as 1880-S, 1886-S, 1897 and 1881 $5 coins, not to mention 1905 and 1911 $2½ coins, and 1883 $1 and US Constitution coins.

"This is an auction that will present excellent buying opportunities both for the advanced collector and the newcomer," said Stephenson's owner and auctioneer, Cindy Stephenson.

"Gold and silver coins stand apart from other types of popular collectibles in that they also have intrinsic value. They have a built-in hedge against inflation, since they're both a commodity and a monetary instrument."

For those looking for fine collectible pieces below $1,000, the flying eagle and Indian-head cents offer an exciting investment prospect, and there are also a number of Barber halves and quarters available.

Stephenson's auction takes place in Southampton, Pennsylvania, starting at 4pm EST. Those bidding might wish to take a look at our Top Five Collectible US Coin Investments, which comments on Indian Head cents, Barber quarters and silver peace dollars.

Alternatively, this range of rare coins is also on the market right now.
