A gold eight escudos minted in the Argentinean province of La Rioja has sold for $18,212 at Heritage Auctions - leading part III of the Eric P Newman collection.
Dating to circa 1831-1832, the uncirculated coin features an exceptional strike twinned with a bold lustre.

It was produced in a local mint 15 years after Argentina had declared independence from Spain - one of a number of mints established due to the impracticality of maintaining a central government before the state's infrastructure was fully developed.
