Bidding on an 1897 Double Eagle Ultra Cameo stands at $26,000 at Heritage Auctions in New York, with the auction due to end on February 4.
Around 86 Double Eagles were minted in 1897, with around 20-25 thought to have survived to the present day. While not the most desirable year, the issue is still considerably rare.

The Ultra Cameo status of the coin refers to its highly reflective surface - a feature of the Double Eagle up until 1902 when the US Treasury altered the production process.
Despite a handful of small contact marks, the coin has received a grading of PR64 and is in excellent condition.
An XF40-graded 1796 B-2 quarter dollar has started at an identical figure of $26,000.

With just 6,146 examples minted, the 1796 quarter is the second rarest US silver type behind the 1796-1797 half dollar and is valued highly at any grade.
The specimen offered in the sale features a strong strike with good detailing on Liberty's hair and robes - and although circulated it features minimal contact marks.
An MS65 graded 1930-S Eagle is at $24,000.
96,000 of the Saint-Gaudens-designed $10 coin were struck in 1930, although the impact of the Great Depression ensured that few were ever circulated.
An MS67 graded example realised $299,000 at a 2009 auction at Heritage and an MS66 made $96,000 in the same year.
