Rare 1963 Aston Martin brings $1m in Arizona

RM's Automobiles of Arizona, the first majorly anticipated automobile event of 2010, got the year off to a great start last week in Phoenix, US.

150 motor cars sold to achieve $19.6m in total, with an impressive 89% sell-through rate.

Despite severe weather, the Thursday evening British-themed night attracted a standing-room-only crowd to the McArthur Ballroom at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Thursday's "The British are Coming" sale saw the 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT sell for over $1m, the top seller of the two-day auction.

The ultra-rare 1963 DB4 GT Superleggera, just one of just six known DB4s built to GT Lightweight specification and the most powerful British car of its era, sold at no reserve.

Having proved itself against Ferrari on race circuits all over the world in the 1960s, the DB4 GT also proved itself before the audience of eager bidders in Arizona, eventually realising a cool $1,001,000.
