A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, contested by six bidders, soared past its £600,000 estimate, bringing £672,000 ($1m) to UK classic car specialist H&H on April 17.

The present example, thought to have undergone a professional colour change to Black early in its life, was never allowed to deteriorate to the point of requiring restoration, and therefore boasts matching engine, chassis and body numbers.
The exceptional sports car also retains its original red leather upholstery and Bosch headlamp surrounds, making it a true period piece.
Reportedly a faster, and more responsive drive than its open-topped stable mate, the Gullwing shows 30,400 miles on the odometer.
