George Washington handwritten letter achieves $40,000 on June 28

A letter handwritten by US president George Washington in 1776, at the height of the American Revolution, made $40,000 at Early American History Auctions in California on June 28.

It reads in full: "Sir: I have now before me your Letter of the 4th Instant, enclosing the report against ordering out any more of the Militia from the counties of Orange, Dutchess, Westchester or Ulster.

George Washington letter
George Washinton wrote the letter in 1776

"The reasons alleged by the Committee to whom this matter was referred, are entirely satisfactory to me, and therefore I do not expect a compliance with that part of my letter which respects this matter.

"I have the honour to be your Most Obedient Servt. -- (Signed) G. Washington."

We have a signed lottery ticket from George Washington available.

A receipt of payment signed by silversmith and US patriot Paul Revere proved another highlight, selling for $25,000.

The receipt shows that "Mr Benjamin Henderson" bought "Six Silver Tea Spoons… Making one pr Silver Sugar Tongs… Making Engraving of Cyphers".

It dates to 1795, 20 years after Revere's famous ride. During this period he was developing the technique of producing rolled sheets of copper, which would be used to line the hulls of ships.
