Sotheby's Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg comments: "It has been fascinating to track the growing recognition achieved by Vilhelm Hammershoi in recent years.
"Hammershoi has finally, and deservedly, attained a status equal to the leading artists of his era."
June 2012 saw Hammershoi's Ida Reading a Letter sell for $2.7m at Sotheby's - a record breaking sum for the artist's work at auction as well as a new world record price achieved by any Danish work of art at auction.
The sense of seclusion and introspection present in Hammershoi's works is central to turn of the century symbolism, of which Hammershoi is now regarded as a leading exponent.
