Fang Zanru's Unseen Scenery to star at Chinese emerging art auction

Fang Zanru's Unseen Scenery IV will provide one of several highlights of an upcoming London auction of emerging Chinese contemporary art.

The 2012 oil on canvas will arrive at the Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions event at Mall Galleries on September 7 with a £25,000 ($38,738) high estimate.

Fang Zanru is a former student of the China Academy of Art, and her Invisible Landscape series has gained her recognition in her homeland.

It is the first time many of the artists have exhibited on the international stage, offering Western collectors the opportunity to pick up a potential bargain - although spotting the "next big thing" in the art market is a notoriously difficult thing to do.

Wang Chaogang's Blossoming Plum Tree will also star among the 150 offerings, arriving with an £18,000 ($27,894) high estimate, while Lin Wei's People Watching I has a £15,000 ($23,245) valuation.

John Deston, the gallery manager at Mall Galleries, remarks: "These works show a level of dedication to technique and draughtsmanship that the Federation of British Artists is thrilled to see."

The auction will be a good gauge of demand for emerging contemporary Chinese works in a market that has traditionally been dominated by the big established names - artists such as Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), whose Lady Red Whisk sold for $11.7m earlier this year.

China was the world's second most valuable art market in 2012, with a 25% share, according to the European Fine Art Foundation. It was overtaken by the US last year, which has a 33% share of the sector.
