The lamp, a 22" diameter domical shade, signed by the artist, carries an all-over design of a variety of orchid blooms in a wide range of colours ranging from red-orange to pink, white and burnished yellow, and rests on a vase shaped decorated base. Both shade and base are finished in a brownish-green patina.
The Porcelli Orchid, the fourth lamp from the studio to be sold by Julia's since 2009, shared the top lot list with a Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Malfrey Pot that sold for $33,925 and a Dale Chihuly Macchia vase that sold for $16,100.
The Porcelli Orchid lamp also sold for a final price of $16,100, besting its highest estimate.
James D Julia's Lamp & Glass Auctions are highlights of the auction calendar and regularly feature the finest glassworks from such makers as Tiffany, Lalique, Gallé, Stueben, Argy Rousseau, Handel, Pairpoint and Daum Nancy in addition to fine contemporary glass.
Recently, they sold a Tiffany Arrowroot table lamp for $92,000 and an 18" Tiffany Peony leaded table lamp for $94,875.
Porcelli has previously had significant successes at the auction house, such as a unique $19,837 Joseph Porcelli lamp which doubled its estimate last year.
