Diego Giacometti wooden screen to beat estimate?

A rare wooden screen by Diego Giacometti is offered at Sotheby’s on May 17.

Giacometti is known to have produced five screens, four of which were designed for collectors Alberto and Marlene Dietrich.

This lot is one of those four.

Diego Giacometti screen

The screen is inlaid with leaves, trees and animals

It’s constructed from oak and ornamented with Diego’s idiosyncratic brass animals. The auction house values it at $321,525-428,700.

A "Carcasse a la chauve-souris" table is among the other highlights, with an estimate of $214,350-321,525.

The value of Diego’s work has grown dramatically in recent years, in part driven by the extraordinary sums paid for the work of his brother Alberto.

The two brothers lived and worked together for all their lives and their styles are very similar.

A recent auction of the Diego Giacometti collection of Hubert de Givenchy saw the vast majority of pieces sell for around four times their estimate.

We expect to see a similar result here.

Art historian Diana Widmaier Picasso says: "I am sure the beauty and purity of all these works, imbued with Diego Giacometti's humanity and powerful imagination, will find a fresh resonance with many collectors throughout the world."
