The East Hampton Elms, a colourful street scene by the prolific American impressionist Childe Hassam, is to cross the block at US auction house Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers on April 25.

The $400,000-600,000 estimated work - executed in 1920 - measures 57 inches by 72 inches and is considered among the artist's finest by critics. A smaller version of the same painting sold for $884,000 in 2006, suggesting the estimate for the present piece is conservative.
