An 'etch' you have to scratch: $18,000 Picasso pieces should tempt art investors

On February 26, Auctions Neapolitan will be holding its 'Collector's Delight' auction, offering a veritable feast of rare and fascinating items to bidders.  With a wide range of pieces for sale - many with affordable estimates - alternative investors will be sure to find something to appeal to their taste.

The leading lot will certainly 'delight' collectors of rare art, consisting of a copy of the play 'Lysistrata', by Aristophanes, accompanied by six etchings by Pablo Picasso.  Created in 1934, the six unique pieces are signed by the legendary Spanish artist and framed under glass.

The highly detailed etchings depict scenes from the play, but have the unmistakable hallmarks of Picasso's style.  With an estimate of $14,000-18,000, this lot is easily the most valuable in the auction.  Work by Picasso makes a fine investment, as we pointed out here.

Although his most famous works such as 'La Lecture' - which was sold recently at Sotheby's - lie outside of the scope of most collectors, pieces including his Reverdy artwork and the etchings in the Neapolitan sale are much more affordable for entry-level investors.

Cherubs
The striking pair of matching wood cherubs

There are plenty of other unique objects to consider.  Lot 185 comprises a pair of matching, parcel gilt and polychrome cherubs, carved from wood.  They originate from late 19th Century Venice, and stand atop a pedestal, each raising a reticulated carved wood cache pot above their heads.

At 57 inches tall, these towering classic statues are quite striking.  They are very rare and in very good condition, and with an estimate of $7,000-9,000, would make an excellent investment for a collector searching for something truly unusual.

Also of note are four Italian marble sculptures of cherubs, each representing one of the four seasons.  Each is 36 inches tall and all are highly detailed.  Their rarity and value is reflected in the estimate of $4,000-6,000.  Marble sculpture is a currently a popular investment - a good example is this bust of the Emperor Nero.

The Neapolitan 'Collector's Delight' sale is real treasure trove, with over 400 lots including antiques, jewellery, figurines, silver, paintings and vases.  It offers a broad range of affordable investment opportunities for many tastes - we at Paul Fraser Collectibles would strongly recommend taking a look.
