Sir William Golding (1911-1993) was an English poet, novelist and playwright, most famous for his novel Lord of the Flies.He was awarded the Booker Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature and a KBE for his services to literature, with The Times ranking him as number three on the list of the 50 greatest writers since 1945.
This extraordinary piece consists of one page of a lengthy quotation from Lord of the Flies, which was first published in 1954. The quotation is from the iconic first chapter of the novel, The Sound of the Shell.
The souvenir quotation features usual slight folds as is expected of pieces like this. Golding's autograph is shown clearly in blue ink at the bottom of the page.
