St. Helena 1884-94 1s yellow-green, watermark CA, error SURCHARGE DOUBLE, upper marginal, SG45a.
A brilliant quality unmounted mint example with full original gum, (hinged on margin only).
In 1884 St. Helena faced shortages of certain denominations and responded by surcharging existing Queen Victoria stamps with new values. During the overprinting process, one sheet received a second impression of the surcharge, creating the famous 'Double Surcharge' error. Only a tiny number escaped into collectors' hands, making it one of the key rarities of the Victorian issues of St. Helena.
This example was taken from the block in the Royal Philatelic Collection, which once housed all known examples of this error. There were only around twenty examples released on to the market in the 1970s.
A spectacular major British Commonwealth rarity and this is one of the finest quality examples in private hands.
Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £4,750.
