Papua 1906 (8 Nov) 2s6d black and brown, type 3 large 'Papua' overprint of Port Moresby, thin paper, WATERMARK VERTICAL, SG28.
A brilliant unmounted mint upper right corner marginal example with full original gum. The stamp has a trivial surface speck but is quite exceptional as it is unmounted mint example of this key British Empire rarity featuring the Lakatoi (trading canoe) with Hanuabada Village in the background.
Surely the finest extant example of this key rarity and unique in this positional form.
Only one sheet of 30 is believed to have been issued (most of which were used).
An incredibly quality rarity and a star in any British Empire collection.
Provenance: Ex William Frazer (Spink 4/6/2003, lot 402).
Accompanied with a Brandon certificate of authenticity (2003).
The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £19,000.
