New Zealand Antarctic Expedition 1911–13 ½d green overprinted “VICTORIA LAND”, SGA2.
A remarkable upper left corner block of six (3x2), with fresh unmounted original gum (margins hinged). Just a couple of fractionally short perforations at foot, otherwise a superb multiple of the highest rarity.
Only 10 sheets were ever printed, and just one other block of six is recorded. A scarce and important survivor from the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, and a significant rarity of polar philately.
SG catalogue value: £5,100+.
These issues were made under authority of the New Zealand Postal Deoartment and, while not strictly necessary, they actually franked correspondence to New Zealand. They were sold to the public at a premium.
