Mary Stuart, better known as Mary, Queens of Scots, ascended to the Scottish throne in 1542 following the sudden death of her father James V.
As she was still a baby, she was sent to relative safety in France and lived there until her return to Scotland in 1561. In 1568, Mary was imprisoned for an alleged plot against the life of English queen Elizabeth I. She was beheaded in 1586.
Mystery enshrouds Mary Stuart. Historians still disagree on the extent of her involvement in the plot against Elizabeth I.
